Chapter 2

I woke up with a start, forgetting I was still floating in the pool. When had I fallen asleep? The sky was already pitch black, so it was hard to tell the time. My senses were on high alert. How could I have fallen asleep so exposed like this! I swiveled around in the water and sniffed the air. I let out a heavy sigh when I realized I was still alone. I dipped my head under the water to wake up a little more and then swam back to the edge of the pool. Pulling myself up, I surveyed my surroundings again. It was either late in the night or early in the morning, but no matter the time I needed to be on my way. I had stayed too long in this place and had more than enough rest. I didnt know which direction I wanted to run in, but after mulling it over I settled on west. It felt right.

With my decision in mind I started walking west. Making a mental note of this place and its oddness.

I had been walking for several hours and the sun had already risen at my back. Its rays pelting my naked skin. I needed to find food and water soon. I didnt drink any from the pool because it had felt wrong. But now Im regretting my decision. After a while I spotted a rabbit a few yards away from me. completely ignorant to my presence. The animal was small and with my extremely high metabolism it wouldnt hold me over for long but it would have to suffice till I could get another meal in my belly. I tensed my body in preparation for attack but before I could fall through with my plan a breeze swept across the area and brought the burnt smell of smoke with it. My movements stilled, and I lifted my nose in the air to get a better whiff. In my distraction I didnt notice the small fur ball get away. I was curious as to where the smell could be coming from. Could it be a forest fire? Or maybe it was some campers? I preferred the latter. They had food.

I started off in the direction the smell was coming from and after a while I could see smoke rising above the tree line. Definitely campers. I crept closer to the camp site passing a sign that had a truck and trailer and read free campsites. I followed a dirt trail, Passing vacant tents and RVs, till I started to hear voices.

I still dont understand why we had to go camping, its fucking disgusting out here. A whiny female voice said. Like, we could have easily found something fun to do at the beach or better yet stayed home! I could practically feel her rolling her eyes. Are yall even listening to me?! she scoffed and then I heard her angry steps retreating. Then someone let out a sigh.

Tell me again why we had to bring her? no one answered so I crept forward and peeked through the brush. There were six people sitting around the fire, minus the girl who walked off, and most of them were rolling their eyes. I looked around the group and studied their faces. Two out of the six people -a blonde boy and a red haired girl- looked bored while the other four -a boy and girl with dreads, and a black haired boy and a more petite red head girl- looked antsy and fidgety like they were itching to do something. My eyes zeroed in on those four. I felt something for them, which was weird considering I had no idea who they were. I smelt the air but only caught the scent of three humans, and four other strange scents. I furrowed my brows and looked back over toward the four people sitting together. They were all looking around and watching the woods like they were waiting for something. I could have sworn I even saw one of them sniff the air. I hadnt noticed I had let out a little growl till I saw all four of them lift their head and stare directly at me. The other two people lifted their heads to talk to their friends, but after the third time of trying to initiate conversation they noticed their friends were staring at something and turned to look at what had caught their attention.

Oh my god the guy.

Is that a wolf! the girl let out a shrill scream and the boy stood up like he was about to do something, but I was too busy still having a staring contest with the other four people that hadnt moved a muscle.

What do we do! the girl started breathing heavy. Dont we like do that baby position or something?! Oh my god what if there are more! I felt like rolling my eyes if I could. This girl was so dramatic. Chase! Do something you fucking idiot! the guy, Im assuming chase, picked up a stick from the ground and started yelling.

Shoo! Go you fucking dog! Go away! Damn beast! he threw the stick close to my head missing me completely, and I whipped my head in his direction and started growling.

Oh my god, Chase! Why did you do that! I slowly started stalking my way towards him but stopped everything when I saw, out of the corner of my eye, the four people stand up in unison. All still staring at me with a weird glint in their eyes. I felt weird, I felt like I wanted to talk with them, and protect them? I dont know. I shook my head a little and turned back to run in the woods.

Wait! I turned around to see that the red haired petite girl had stepped forward, and fixed her mouth like she wanted to say something.

I-I... y-you- before she could finish what she wanted to say the guy, chase, cut her off.

Lyall! What the fuck are you doing?! If the beast wants to run off let it. He had yelled at her and I didnt like that one bit. I whipped my head around and started growling at him louder than before.

Just go. I heard a soft voice say. I turned my head to see that the dread head guy had spoken, and he dipped his head at me. I just stared at him for a few seconds before trotting back the way I had come.
