The sky was almost black now. They needed to sleep somewhere but they were on a railing in the middle of a forest. And they were afraid of phoners, they could be anywhere.

- "Where are we gonna sleep?" Denise asked Tom.

- "I don't know." He answered.

- "Maybe... we can build like a tent of big sticks?" Jordan said.

- "That sounds good." Tom said. "We just need to find a lot of big sticks." They started to look around on the ground and they sometimes broke trees. When they had enough sticks they started to build tents of it. And Denise had a sort of rope on her so they could tie the sticks together. Now they had two tents. They decided that Tom slept in the little smaller while Denise and Jordan shared the little bigger tent.

Before they slept, they sat on the ground and talked about their lives and other stuff.

- "So how did your brother become a phoner?" Tom asked Denise.

- "He called one of his friends. And then he heard the signal and turned into a phoner. Like everyone else."

- "I wonder if Clay is okay." Tom said.

- "Mm. I don't think so. I think it was a trap." Denise said.

- "Yeah." Tom agreed. "So Jordan, do you have a family?"

- "I have a mom and step dad. But they didn't really feel like a family to me. I had a sister but she disappeared a few years ago."

- "I'm so sorry." Denise said.

- "But Andai was like a father to me. I miss him so much." Jordan started to tear up. "But I guess my family are phoners now."

- "Why didn't you turn into a phoner?" Tom asked Jordan.

- "I don't have a phone. I didn't really need one. I like to read and be outside more. But my mom wanted to give me a phone now when I turned 12." Jordan said.

- "But how did Ardai die?" Denise almost whispered it. Jordan looked at her and teared up again, thinking about when he realized that Ardai was gone.

- "It looked like suicide. I think that the phoners made him do it, telepathically." Tom figured out.

- "Yeah, I think that happened." Denise said.

- "Please can we talk about something else?" Jordan asked, a few tears falling from his eyes.

- "Sorry." Tom said.

- "So how's your life?" Denise asked Tom.

- "I lived alone in an apartment in Malden." He said. "What did Clay say to you?" Tom asked Jordan.

- "About the spray can?"

- "Yeah."

- "He said that I needed to spray the first letters in our names onto a tree on the left side of the road. So he can follow us to Canada." Jordan said.

- "Oh." Denise said.

- "He can have survived." Jordan said, but he knew somewhere that Clay never made it from Kashwak. But he still wanted to belive that he was on his way to them. Tom and Denise didn't think Clay made it, so they believed that he was dead or a phoner know.
