Before I went home last night I visited one of my 'companions' with orders to discover the whereabouts of my inspector.
Such as where he lives, where he works, what he wears, what he eats, who he sees etc. I need to know him before I can kill him. As of right now a cigarette jutted lazily between my teeth as I read through the thick folder of information on Mr.Campbell that was waiting for me this morning on the library doorstep, concealed by the daily paper. The library was empty and my feet were perched up onto my desk per usual. To any sane person I would probably look atrocious.
A lady slouching in her chair with her skirt falling down her calves because her feet were kicked up onto a table surrounded by the smoke from her cigarette. What a sight indeed. I turned the page and read on with satisfaction, my girls were good workers. Of coarse their deeds would not go with out reward but for now I need to focus on the inspector.
I reread his address for his work and his housing plenty of times.I reread his description, his age, his favorite drink and meal, his families and friends names, their nicknames, their addresses, his weaknesses, his advantages. There was so much detail I could only sit and soak it in like a happy little sponge. I had just reached his law record when I heard the jingle of the bell that hung over the main entrance. Quickly flipping the folder shut I looked up to find Thomas Shelby staring down at me across from my desk. His brow was raised in amusement as he looked on at the scene.
I hastily pulled a drawer out and tossed the folder inside, locking it up with a key before taking my cigarette out of my mouth and blowing out the smoke.
"Can I help you Mr.Shelby?"
I asked, putting out my cigarette and dropping my feet back onto the floor. He leaned on the counter with his forearms, still intensely scanning my face.
"I thought you couldn't smoke in libraries."
He said, glancing at my overflowing ashtray. I smirked at his small talk, knowing full well that he was toying with me.
"You can if you don't get caught, but something tells me your not here to discuss the laws of the library."
I replied, crossing my arms. He nodded and pulled out his own cigarette.
"Got a match?"
He asked, I nodded lightly and struck one for him. He leaned in and allowed me to light him up before standing up fully and blowing out a long puff of smoke.
"Miss West you are aware that your little scene last night at my pub was quite amusing, alluring almost."
I cocked a brow in shock as I watched him closely.
"I'm not that surprised Mr.Shelby, I am very attractive."
I retorted, this time causing him to raise a brow.
"You are also aware that I have entered my horse Monaghan Boy in the Campton races."
I nodded, who wouldn't know that. It's all the people of Small Health could talk about! He noticed my silence and continued.
"He's actually outside your doors right now, would you like to see him?"
I narrowed my eyes but slowly stood up. I didn't dare glance at the drawer as I did so, it would be too suspicious of me.
"Allow me to grab my coat?"
I asked, motioning a hand towards the back room. He nodded as he took another long drag.
"I'll wait for you."
I took little time in grabbing my coat, checking for my pistol, and making my way back to the peaky blinder.
