I heard the twigs snapping as I ran. I couldn't tell if they were from me, or from them. All I knew was that I had to run faster. As I passed the tree line at the edge of the clearing I realized I had no cover any more. I was out in the open where they could shoot me down at any second. Then I saw him. Alex Moore standing in the middle of the field. I ran to him, not knowing exactly why. I have never spoken a word to him, nor has he spoken to me and yet, I feel safest when I am with him. By now the chasers have found us and there is no where else to go. We were cornered with nothing but a cliff and a deadly drop into the ocean behind us. I looked at Alex and for the first time ever I saw fear in his eyes. How did I not notice that when I first ran to him? Then he speaks,
"Run, Mia. Run and don't look back. I'll be right behind you."
I froze, confused and unsure, and his patience snapped.
"RUN!" He yelled and pushed me behind him. I listened and began running towards the edge of the cliff. Once I reached it, I looked back, and I saw something I could never forget. Alex was being dragged back into the woods, beaten up and defeated. Now the chasers were coming for me, and I only had one way out. So, I jumped. Then I woke up.
