"Rebecca, we couldn't find an easier way of putting this, so we're just going to throw it out there." My mom explained. "Your great-grandfather... passed away last week."

I sat there, thinking about what to say.

"That was unexpected, I guess. How did he die?"

I wasn't really that close to my great-grandfather, which was why I wasn't really bawling my eyes out. I still was a little sad.

"He had a stroke."

We sat there for a while, waiting for someone to say something. This already was a sad conversation, so I just blurted out what was happening at school.

"Alissa and I are probably not friends anymore."

"What?" my mom was flabbergasted. "You guys have been friends since Preschool! What happened?"

"This popular girl name Georgia invited her to her table and she went there."

"Oh well, give it a chance. She'll probably regret going to that table, apologize to you, and you both will become friends again. I wouldn't worry if I were you."

"Okay..." I replied. I was also very skeptical. I headed back to my room and worried.

The next day in homeroom, I tried to talk to Alissa, but she wasn't very attentive.

In Science class, our teacher talked about the Science Showcase that was coming up.

"It's a contest!" she explained. "To see who's project is the best. You will be assigned partners."

Ms. Reid read the list of partners. "Dean and Chiara, Jason and Calvin, Benjamin and Serena, Alissa and Rebecca..."

That was a perfect opportunity to socialize with Alissa! I was pretty ecstatic about that.

After class, I asked her to me meet me at my house 5 after school to work on the project, but she just dismissed the idea like it was no big deal. So, I went home alone after class, walked up my street, entered my house, and found myself in a room FULL of relatives. It was obviously because my great-grandfather died.

Sadly enough, I had no time to waste since this project was due in two weeks. Even Sadly-ER enough, my very chatty Aunt Christina came up to me.

"Hi, Rebecca!" she cried. "How are you?" And then she gave me a hug.

Oh, great. Does this mean I can't have Alissa over?

"Hi," I quickly said. And hurried to my room.

I know it was rude to leave my Aunt like that, but I had the feeling the I would be sucked into a super long, deep, and boring conversation that I would never be able to escape.

Hours passed. By now I was sure that Alissa would not come over, so I just worked on it myself.

The next day at school, I went up to her and asked why she didn't come over.

"I was with my friends." She replied, and she also seemed kind of mad about it.

So day after day I worked on the project without Alissa. My relatives were there every single day I worked. Yet they were distracting, but I managed to finish the project without a single word typed by Alissa. As I was handing in my project, the backstabber went up to me.

"Put my name on it," she ordered.
