I opened my eyes. What time was it? I looked up slightly to see the clock. 8:30….Better be pm. I closed my eyes again trying to pull them back open. I looked again at the clock. Nope, right there; 8:30 am. I rolled over seeing Audrey, still curled in a ball sleeping.
“Lucky…” I knew falling back asleep now that I woke up, was out of the question. I sat up; somehow I was able to move. I moved over to the basement washroom, I splashed my face with water. Was that all a dream? I looked up at the mirror, thinking over everything thing that had happened last night.
I shook it off, picking up my tooth brush and being to get my day started. After a little while, I pulled my hair up into a ponytail. I moved back into the living room where Audrey was still curled in a ball. I looked down, seeing my phone.
“I wonder…” I grabbed it, looking down at it; the light of it came on as I unlocked it. There at the top of my phone it said ‘two missed calls.’ I clicked on the symbol. It was just my mom calling; my heart sank; I guess it was really just a dream. I dropped my phone onto the couch, and made my way up to the main floor. Oddly enough, the first thing that came to mind was food. The house was empty, both my parents had gone to work; I shrugged noticing a note on the counter. “If you and Audrey are going to be out all week, you have to behave and not get into too much trouble. Keep in touch, Love mom xx.” I read aloud, I couldn’t help but smile. I looked out the window, the sun had come up. I placed the note down on the counter, and picked up some bread; being to make peanut and jelly sandwich. I made more than just one; I began making loads so when Audrey awoke she would have something to eat. After a little while, I heard muttering. They muttering came louder and soon I could hear Audrey yelling.
“What is your problem?” I heard her stomp all the way up, the door flung open and she came stumbling around the corner. “It is a weekend, why the hell is your alarm on!?” She began at me almost throwing my phone at me. She then turned and made her way to the living room and fell onto the couch.
“Want some food?” I asked her trying not to laugh as I turned off “Time to get up” which was my alarm. “What you got?” She called as she grabbed the controller, clicking it making my iPod blink to life a play whatever song was first.
“Sandwiches.” I said bluntly, waiting for her reply. “Got anything else?” She asked sleepily. I moved closer to the couch looking down at her, my eyebrow raised.
“And that would be?” I asked. I began listing things that I could make as I moved back to the kitchen.
“Eggs?” She asked popping her head up with a smile. I laughed nodding my head. I began taking out the eggs and other mixtures to make for her. I wasn’t much of a cook, but I could make mean omelet. After we eat I made my way to my bedroom and began packing. We had a week off of school and Audrey’s parent’s friend had a really nice hotel booked, but something had come up and they couldn’t use it. Everything had been paid for and cancelling would have coasted more money. Audrey and I wanted to go out and have a nice week off, away from those people we are stuck with every day of the year; both our parents had agreed to let us go stay at the hotel in place of the friend. Turns out they were all good with it too; they changed the name to Audrey’s last name so that it wouldn’t be so weird. The two of us had looked up the hotel on the internet; it was one high class hotel. It was the nicest in all of Calgary; everyone important stayed there. It was close to the stadium, and the down town core.
Audrey had taken the chance to jump into the shower. I moved around my room, grabbing clothes and cords for different devices. I stopped looking at my walls around my bed; pictures flooded the wall, some of my friends, others of me, I had even printed pictures of famous people that I looked up to. Lights hung around the top of all of them as a boarder, above that was words cut out of magazines. The quote said “Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius, and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.” I smiled making my way over to my closet pulling out some nicer outfits, in case we end up going out. Audrey’s eighteenth birthday had pasted, and mine was coming up. It was two days away, which is another reason my mother allowed me to stay out at a hotel. The hotel had loads of clubs, and bars right around the area; walking distance so that I wouldn’t need to drive anywhere. Audrey had been waiting for my eighteenth to come; I was the silly little good girl who had never gotten drunk. I had tired a cooler before, but I had little to no taste for alcohol. I could see it, being at the club or a bar on my birthday. Audrey saying something to some and a bunch of drunken people singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me, Audrey would be drunk and I would be the only sober one. I started to laugh; chances are that is how it would end up.
Audrey came out of the shower, wet hair, wrapped in a towel with a toothbrush in hand. She left the washroom and I heard her move down back to the basement to go grab her stuff. I went into the washroom and grabbed my toothbrush and some makeup I could grab before Audrey came back. I threw it all into a big Gym bag that had our school name on it. I walked back out to the living room area, my phone buzzed, just as Audrey walked out fully dressed tooth brush sticking out of her mouth. I grabbed it, as it began to sing “Call me maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. I gave a quick look over to Audrey, who must have changed my ringtone, she smiled slightly.
“It made more sense.” She shrugged giving a swift who is it, before turning back down the hall into the washroom.
“Unknown number…My phone usually tells me the number.” I said aloud, letting my phone ring more. Before Audrey yelled down the hall “Just pick it up!”
“Hello?” I picked up the phone with a bit of hesitation.
“Hi love!” Came a weird British accent; my heart jumped, who was this?
“Um, hi.” I said shyly, still not fully sure of whom it was.
“Have a good sleep?” The voice was very flirty, and made me start to think that last night wasn’t a dream.
Just as I went to respond, I heard a faint laughing from far off on the other line. The speaker moved the phone away from his face and gave a very not British “Shut up!” Then came back “sorry love, what did you say?” The accent wasn’t the same, only one person could come to mind now. Jared. One of my friends, a joker; if it was possible for someone like Louis Tomlinson to be compared to someone I knew. Well, Jared was it. Louis and Jared were so much alike, sometimes I could see even facial expression that they looked identical. But Jared compared to Louis was nowhere near as good looking.
“Hi Jared.” I said very unimpressed; he let out a very loud sigh and ‘aw’.
“You guys ruined it!” He called back to whoever he was with. I laughed slightly taking a seat on the couch. Audrey must have heard who I was taking to because she appeared again looking likely more unimpressed than myself. She simply mouthed ‘He is not coming with us.’ Than she was gone again.
Jared’s voice came back to the phone again. “So I heard you were going out for your eighteenth.” I could hear the slight flirt, trying to get his way a free ticket to go a bar and out drinking.
“Yes, I am. Audrey and I are going to go out for my birthday.” I knew where he was going with it, but I wanted to see where he’d take it, he always made me laugh.
“What, no big party? You have the whole week off, and you get the chance to finally drink, and you’re not having a party!?” He sounded slightly disgusted.
“I am not a big party hardy, and I don’t have enough friends.” I stated, “And anyways, I would likely be the only one not drinking if I had a party.” I had thought about having a party but it was true. I would be the one taking care of everyone making sure they were all okay.
“Yeah I guess, but I think you and Audrey should come grab me before going out, I’d be a blast to get drunk with.” I let out a laugh.
“Jared, I have seen you when you aren’t drunk! I am not so sure I want to see you drunk!” He laughed, “Yeah well. Whatever.”
“And even if I wanted you to come, we are staying at a hotel in Calgary and going to places close by there.” I was trying to get off the topic, I need to jump in the shower and get ready than go grab the rest of Audrey’s things before heading out.
“I could find a way there!” He protested, “Oh! Than I could stay with you guys at the hotel. You know, keep the party going!” Jared said in the flirtiest voice he could. I started laughing and couldn’t stop which only caused him to start laughing.
I was soon able to get control of my laughing. “No, Jared. You can’t come, Audrey and I are going out to get away from everyone we know, not to bring them along and get them drunk. Sorry.”
I could hear him pout. “Not fair!” He said in a childish voice. “I know, but little boys like you shouldn’t be drinking anyways.” I laughed before telling him I had to go. Through much difficulty I got off the phone with him. I stood shaking my head; Audrey had been snaking on the P&J I had made. She nodded at me before making my way to the washroom. This was going to be a strange week, I could already tell.
