A Wish Has Rules

I had been granting wishes for years and unfortunately they had rules, and sometimes those rules are ones people choose not to follow. When they don't follow them, they have to live in my cave as unhappy creatures that can't even move. It hurts me to look at them.

When Ariel came to me she wanted to become a human to meet her love. The rules were she had to get a kiss from him by sunset on the third day, and I had to take her voice. She signed the contract and became human.

I kept her voice in a shell necklace, and often checked up on her. Even though she was Triton's daughter, I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to her.
