Jenny awoke to Laura climbing into her bed. Jenny sluggishly looked at the time. 3:00Am. Laura must've had a nightmare. As Laura wormed her way into the bed Jenny adjusted herself to make room. Soon Laura's bright red eyes were poking through the covers. "Sorry." Laura whispered. "I didn't mean to wake you." Jenny only grunted in reply, she was always happy to have Laura in here. Jenny did have trouble sleeping herself.
"You have a nightmare?" Jenny croaked, rubbing her eyes. Laura nodded. "Wanna talk about it?" Jenny looked at Laura, concerned. Laura paused, then shook her head. "That's alright." Jenny said, soothingly. She kissed Laura's pale forehead and wrapped her arms around her. Laura nuzzled into Jenny's touch and quickly fell asleep. Jenny laid awake holding Laura, she probably wouldn't be able to sleep. She was going to work in about 4 hours so it didn't really matter. She listened to Laura snore, gently huffing breath onto Jenny's chest. For someone who slept all day Laura sure did rest especially easy at night. She sighed and closed her eyes.

The alarm blasted throughout the room. Laura whined loudly in retaliation. Jenny sat up in bed and turned it off. She must've dozed off- she really should remember to take her sleeping meds. Laura buried herself under the blankets as Jenny got up to get dressed. Jenny slipped off her shirt and Laura peaked one eye out. It was dark, but Laura could still see Jenny's dark scarred skin. Jenny's back was covered in dark brown freckles, her scars were pale indents in her skin. Jenny was quite muscular, she had to be for her job. Her dark curly hair bluntly cut right above her neck, James' doing. Laura blushed at the sight of Jenny's bare back and pushed herself back under the covers. Jenny put on her work clothes beneath her sweater and brushed, what hair she could grab, into a crude ponytail. Laura knew Jenny didn't care much about her looks, but she was gorgeous even so effortlessly. "Hey," Jenny called out, Laura squeaked from under the covers. "I'm heading off to work in a bit, I'll bring you back some food ok?" Laura stuck her head out and nodded. Jenny knew fully well Laura could cook and provide for herself but she still felt the need to mother her. Even if Laura was older than her she felt like she was babysitting her. Jenny slipped on her shoes and headed towards the bedroom door. "And I promise," Jenny said, putting her hand on her chest. "I'll be back before midnight." Laura smiled and nodded, though she knew it was a lie. Jenny was never home when she was supposed to be. Her work was very demanding. Laura understood, sorta...
Just like that Jenny was out the door, gone. Laura was all alone in the two story house. She looked outside, front tinted the window and she could see snow flakes beginning to fall. She had nothing to do inside. Jenny has always insisted on her not going outside. She'd be taken again, trafficked off. Laura could see her reflection in the window. She was pale, always had been after she'd been taken. Her hair was pure white and slightly curled. It sat neatly over her shoulders. Her eyes were a piercing red. She was what the humans called "albino". Where she was from, it was considered a gift. "To have a child with no pigment was a gift from the queen." Her mother would say. She didn't feel like it was a gift. She felt ugly. Her nose was that of a bunny's, her ears flopped over her head. Such a burden. Why couldn't she be human? Laura pulled the blankets off of her and hung her legs over the side of the bed. Her fur pawed feet cascaded into normal skin at her knees. Everything about her body was wrong. She wasn't human- and she wasn't a girl. The two things she wanted to be more than anything in life.
Having enough of feeling sorry for herself, Laura got up and headed downstairs. It was quiet aside from the slight creaking of the floor when she stepped. She looked out the glass back door and saw the snow slowly piling up. This was her favorite time of year. She loved the feeling of snow on her feet. Jenny was gone... going outside for a moment won't hurt, right? Laura eagerly put on a jacket and headed outside. Slowly, she placed her feet into the snow, sending a chill up her spine. It was so refreshing, real air, the cold, she loved it. Laura couldn't help herself. She began bouncing and running around. The wind whistled in her ears and bounced her hair around. She felt like a child playing in the snow. It was moments like these that kept her going. Moments like these that she wishes she could live in forever.
