Veronica's POV

"I don't want to go!" Cassie shrieked,tears streaming down her face.

"You have to Cassie. You don't have a choice." I snapped. "Besides,you won't get chosen. Our names are one in about a hundred."

"But we are children of victors! We are always chosen!" She yelled.

Yep,you heard that right. I'm Veronica Shadow,and I live in the weathly section of District 13 with my younger sister,Cassie,and my parents,David and Angela. Both of my parents won the Hunger Games, beating 23 other children to emerge as the only survior,therefore the victor/victoress. My name literaly means,'bringer of victory'. You think your parents have high standards? Mine want me to kill 23 other kids.

Today was the reaping,and the 25th anniversay of the day Katniss Everdeen volenteered for her sister in District 12. This is the worst day to have a reaping. Katniss Everdeen started a rebellon.killing thousands in her war that took down the capitol and and destroyed the Hunger Games. Her sister died. All for nothing.

Katniss died hunting in the woods outside District 12. A bear attacked her from behind as she picked some herbs or something. After that,President Snow's granddaughter managed to rally enough people to begin another rebellion. She won against the rebels,and the Hunger Games continued.

I'm 15 years old,and my younger sister is 12. This is her first Reaping,and in case you can't tell,she's a bit scared.

"Girls! Come get dressed!" Our mother Called.

"You'll be fine Cass. No big deal." I whispered to Cassie,walking upstairs. My mom had laid out a beutiful black and red dress that went to my knees.

"Thank you Mom." I said,hugging her,then changing. I ran a brush through my long black waves,then walked downstairs. Cassie,Mom,and Dad were already there,waiting.

"Don't you look sweet?" I crooned to Cassie,knowing it would piss her off. She was wearing a fluffy white dress,and if looks could kill,Mom and I would be dead.

"Well girls,lets go!" Our Mom clapped her hands,and off we went.

When we got there,our parent went up to the stage. As Victors,they need to,or whatever. They wouldn't be mentors,that's the winner from last year. Not that it mattered,since I wouldn't be going. I kissed the top of Cassie's head,and then we went to our seperate areas.

I glanced over to the boys area,trying to find my best friend,Jules Andrews. He was in the 16 year old boys area. Spotting me,he winked. I rolled my eyes at him as Lena Morrow stepped to the mike.

"Welcome to the 99th annual Hunger Games Reaping!" She called dramtically. "It's so nice to see all of your happy,smiling faces,staring up at me!" I glanced around,not seeing any happy faces around me. Unless you counted my smirking...

"Now,of couse,we have ladies first!" Lena stepped over to the glass bowl containing the girls names. Digging in for a moment,she drew out a paper and leaned over to the mic.

"Cassandra Shadow!" She read off. Time seemed to slow down,sound dimming. Cassie...No." I snapped back,seeing my sister being led up. My parents were beaming,and I felt sick.

"NO!" It took me a moment to relizing that it came from me. I shoved through the other girls,walking down the alise. Peacekeepers snatched my arms,holding me back. I shook them off angerily.

"I volenteer! I volenteer as tribute!" I yelled. Everyone froze. Cassie's eyes widened as Lena cheered,smiling.

"No Nikki!" She cried as the peacekeepers led me up. Jules came up and grabbed Cassie,pulling her away.

"Go get them Nikki." He mouthed,smiling slightly. I stood beside Lena on the stage.

"Well darling,what's your name?" Lena asked me.

"Veronica Shadow." I said,smirking at the crowd like I had done this because I wanted to,not because I couldn't watch my sister do this.

"I'll bet that was your sister,wasn't it."

"Of course. Wouldn't want her snatching all the glory,isn't that right?" I snipped.

"Right you are,right you are!" Lena walked over to the boys bowl."Now,for the men!"

She fished through,pulling out a paper.

"Aaron Westinghouse!" She called. Aboy tall,brown haired and green eyes biy stepped out from the group of 16 year olds,looking frightened. I didn't know him,but his name was pretty dull,and he looked like he lived in the seam part of the district. He stood beside me,and we shook hands as instructed by Lena.

After that,we were escorted in the Town Hall,where we would see our friends and family for the last time before going to the Capitol. what was happing finally sunk in,and my heart started hammering in my chest. I was going to have to kill other kids....

The first people to come in were my parents.

"We're so proud!" My mom gushed,pulling me into a hug. "I only wish we were mentoring you darling!" I forced a smile

"I'll win Mom,no problem." I told her cockily.

"Of course,we'd expect no less,my little Victory bringer." My father patted me on the back,smiling widely.A peacekeeper poked his head in. 

"Time's up." He said tonelessly. I hugged my parents one last time,and they left. Next,Cassie rushed in.

"Nikki! Why did you do it!" My sister sobbed,hugging me.

"Shh,shh. Cassie,listen. No matter what,don't freak out. Whatever you see on that screen,keep your cool. I need you to help rally sponsers around here,so I can win and come back." I told her. She nooded tearfully.

"That's my girl. Don't worry about anything." She sniffed,handing me a little red and black pin. 

"Wear this as your token. It'll give you good luck." I nodded,taking it as the Peacekeeper opened the door.

"Time's up."

"Win Veronica! Win for me!" She sobbed,holding on to me.

"I will!" I called as she was dragged away fom me.

I sigehd and sat on the couch.

Jules walked in next. I smiled thinly,glad to see him. He hugged me tightly.

"As soon as you get there,get some knives. You can find food wherever you go,and water as well." I shook my head.

"Julie,there are 14 of us in there,and only one of us come out. The chances that I'll be the one to make it are-"

"Incredibly high." He intterupted. "Nikki,you've been trained to do this since you could walk. They haven't. You can do this. Win,and come back for Cassie,and me." The peacekeeper opened the door. Jules sighed,kissing me briefly on the lips before leaving. I blinked,touching my tinging lips.

Lena came and got me,and we were on the train before I knew it.

Next stop,The Capitol.

Kalena's POV

Well,hasn't today been a big day?

"Kalena Everdeen!" The Mayor's lip curled,and I smirked. Yes,that tends to happen when my name is metioned,because my Grandmother was the girl who started the rebellion. To bad it didn't work for long....

I had no family,and no friends,so I waited a bit before the boy from my district and I got on the train. As soon as I got to my room,I watched the other reapings. No one to abnormal. The Carrer districts had the burly guys and clever looking girls. Only one stood out. Veronica Shadow,the daughter of two well known victors,volenteered for her little sister. Like my grandmother did. She looked scary,and very clever. She would be a good ally,and a very bad enemy.
