Among all of the others in Lockup, I seemed to be the only one who was calm about all of this. Either way, I wouldn't have showed my emotions, not around these people. They all committed some form of a crime. Most of them aren't frightening, at first glance. But since they're in lock up the take over a persona completely opposite of who they are. Stealing rations for a sick relative made a sweetheart stone cold once they're convicted.
The Guards led me to The General, I never trusted this man. There was something about the way he stood and talked was like he was always keeping a secret. Plotting to stab you in the back the moment your eyes is off of him. He pink lips were pursed and his small eyes narrowed down on me as I approached.
"Hold out you wrist." He ordered. Everyone else resisted, putting up a fight; and resulting in them getting shocked into submission. I held out my wrist and he put a silver wristband with glowing prongs on it. When he closed it around my wrist the prongs quickly pierce my skin. I winced looking at it. The Guards pushed me into a line. I stood behind a famous convict. Octavia Blake; Bellamy's younger sister. When I bumped into her she turned back at me as if she wanted to hit me. But stopped in her tracks. Maybe she knows I could take her.
"Imani?" Disbelief on her tongue. "What's a goody-goody like you doing in Lockup? Bellamy used to go on about how you're a modeled citizen." Octavia is one of those people that's become hard. Her mother was floated for having her. Thus resulting in Octavia being here. I before now, I've met Octavia once by accident. She was doe eyed and grinning like a child let loose in a toy story.
"I guess people change." We moved along into the drop ship. We all took our seats and buckled up. The movement was chaotic and forced. Even as we were all getting on the ship, some still resisted. It made my stomach turn to see all of these young people in this ship. I think it even hurts me, at one point all these people would've died at the hands of Chancellor Jaha. My brother. It kinda sucked when I really thought about it, how all these people, would've eventually met the same fate. For what? Being born in Octavia's case, making sure a sickly father eats in a guy named Dylan's case.
Now the hatred for Jaha seems justifiable. How could you treat your people like this? I always wanted to say, especially after our parents passed. How could you be so cruel. I never could. Knowing why his goal was to send these kids to death the moment they turned 18 might be too much for me to handle. But even with my eyes open to see a new light, I still can't find in my heart to hate him. No matter how numb I get.
Sitting besides me is Bellamy. My heart used to jump through hoops when I saw him. His hair is slicked back like it always was, but his kind face was strained. He held on to his seat belt tightly and kept his eyes closed. I never seen him look this frightened. Without thinking I put my hand on his. When he looked at me, I gave him a reassuring smile, but I got a puzzled look.
"Imani? What are you doing on here?"
"Going to earth, just like you."
"But... why, what did you do?"
"Doesn't matter." I took note of his uniform. "I didn't know they were sending Guards to the ground."
"It's just me." He said quickly looking away.
"I didn't know you were still a guard." I softly said. He clenched his jaw resting his head on the head rest.
"I guess they thought killing my mother and locking up my sister was punishment enough." He deep voice was dark, it almost didn't sound like the sweetheart I met long ago. It was sad, good people can only take so much pain in this little world of ours. And yet we can only run so far from the destruction that still finds its way to us after a hundred years. My parents always used to say that we didn't belong up here, but we didn't know how to belong on the ground.
