~If you don't leave the past in the past, it will destroy your future. Look at what's in front of you, not what yesterday took away. The best is yet to come. (George Strait)~

I am Millascent Eve Karrera, most call me Evie. When I was born, much like everyone else, there was a 'timer' embedded in my wrist. It looks a lot like a tattoo but it constantly counts down until it hits zero before it disappears. The timer counts down the years, months, days, minutes, and seconds until we meet our soulmates. It is the greatest thing to know that there is someone out there that has the exact same count down as you, at least that's how everyone else sees it.

Today is my twenty-fifth birthday and I have to work. It's a Saturday so tonight will be busy at the tavern and if I don't get moving I will be late! I grab my pocket book and run out the door. The group said that they would come by and wish me a happy birthday later in the night so it won't be a complete waste of a night.

As I walk into the bar and start my shift I hear many hello's and happy birthday's ring out. With a smile I get behind the bar and begin the long night of work. One of my friends, Alice, walks in with her soulmate, Jake. With a happy shout she takes her seat at the bar and just begins babbling away but one thing makes me pause, "What does your count down say?"

Years back I stopped looking at it unless I was asked about it. My friends all found theirs either as we were graduating or soon after but we saw this coming. I look down at my right wrist to see that the years are at zero so are the months and days. "Sixteen hours, five minutes, and four seconds."

Alice and Jake both start beaming at me, "You're meeting him soon then!"

I look down slightly nervous now, I never really looked forward to meeting him but now I can't help being excited. What will he look like? Is he excited to meet me? Is he nice? Where is he from? Millions of questions swirl about in my head and I have to force them all away. I'm at work there is no need for me to think about it now. I'll probably forget about it later anyway. I always forget what that thing shows me. I give them both a small smile, "Looks like it but it isn't all that to be honest. I mean think about it. What if we are complete opposites and an error pops up?"

"You know what they say Evie, 'Opposites attract'." Alice seems to sing out as she leans against Jack but I know all too well how wrong that is for me. "You'll be so happy when you meet him. I mean look at Jack and I."

I shake my head as I look at them, "You two are happy because you are basically the same person. I'm saying what if he's so outgoing and goes to huge parties with tons of people or he's in some kind of gang? Look at me! You know I could never be with someone like that." That is such a lie! Well, at least the gang part but then again I'm not all I seem and my friends only see this sweet innocent side.

"From birth you are matched with someone that is perfect for you. I'm not saying it's going to be all butterflies and rainbows but you two will get there, I promise. Just stop worrying about it and let it all happen. It is so thrilling to meet the person that is perfect for you. You will figure it all out."

"Yeah, I mean even though Alice and I are soulmates we still have our arguments. It's not always smooth sailing and you can handle a lot more than most so your man may be someone that pushes you."

I roll my eyes at Jake, "Your arguments are over what movie to watch and where to eat." For the rest of the night we didn't talk about my soulmate and they left right before closing. I walk home completely drained and ready to go to bed. I don't work tomorrow so I'll sleep in a bit before running some errands.

~*~*~*~

I walk into the dinning room for supper and as I sit there in silence, all alone, I take a look at my wrist. Now I'm just counting down the hours. This is amazing I have waiting for this for billions of years. Since the land of humans was created. I am the first of my kind and I have a feeling my soulmate is not one of us because twelve hours from now I will be within those dangerous lands and no supernatural dares go there after what we saw. We hide in the shadows and use magick to stay out of sight. Our homes are surrounded in glamours and teleportation charms so that the humans cannot stumble into them.

It isn't safe for us to stay away from our warded homes for long. Hunters find our trail too quickly and none of them care that we haven't harmed a single human. That is why only the most powerful, the firsts, the royals are the ones that go. We go to gather information and try to find our soulmates. The thought that I will be meeting her so soon brings a smile to my face and lightens my mood. I run a finger over the tattoo as the food is brought out.

I simply can't wait to have her sitting at my side, telling me how her day went. I will give her anything she wants but... I will have to protect her with everything I have. As we have been hunted down and brought dangerously close to extinction by the humans many of our kinds have become... violent towards them and a human does not last long in our lands. We must take precautions and I cannot let her know what we are and that we are different until I know that she will accept me and my kind.
