"Mom!! I don't want to go to school!" I whined as my alarm rang obnoxiously.

"Don't be silly, honey. Just go, there's a first time for everything!" She replied with amusement evident in her voice.

Yep, I was going to be the new girl in a whole new school in California. My mother and I had moved here from London.

I got out of the bed, grumbling all the while about how unfair life is. I quickly got ready for school as I was already running late. Rushing downstairs, I tried to pull on my socks , tame my unruly hair and heave my bag onto my shoulders all at the same time.

"Bye, Mom! No time for breakfast!" I yelled in the general direction of the kitchen where my mother was preparing breakfast for my little brother. Without waiting for her response, I slammed the door shut and started to drag my feet towards the school. I didn't own a car; we didn't have the money to afford such luxuries.

When I finally reached the school, I ran a few fingers through my brown hair anxiously. I hoped I looked presentable enough.

I had been given a tour of the campus the day before, so I knew the way around. I made my way to the office to collect my schedule.

"May I help you?" The lady seated behind the desk enquired with a polite smile.

I requested for my schedule. She unpinned it from a board and passed it to me. "Have a good day, darling!" She said cheerfully. I nodded at her with a slight smile and thanked her.

Well, here goes, I thought nervously.
