Just a phone call away

I stare in shock at Allison. The words repeating in my head over and over again.
*They didn't make it....*
Then as if the wall to my tear ducts broke I break down sobbing. How could they have not made it? They were the strongest people I know. This must be a mistake....this has to be a mistake.
Allison rubs my back soothingly and says kind words to me as I cry. I need to see my brother I think to my self.

"Where's A-alex? I n-need to see Alex." I say in between sobs.
"He's with his aunt. We were gonna send him into foster care if you didn't wake up but then she ran into the hospital saying she was his aunt and that she would take him until you got better."
I look at her confused. Aunt? What did she mean if I didn't wake up? Wasn't I only passed out for a day?
"What? We don't have an au- oohh..."

Just then Lily popped into my head. She has been my best friend since we were little and always said she was my sister and my brother was her nephew, which didn't make any sense but we mad it work. She must have took him knowing I would have been heart broken if he was sent into foster care. I stops crying getting ready to ask the question that would tell me if my brother got kidnapped by a random person or not.

"Did his aunt have long blonde hair and blue eyes with an accent that sounded kind of southern?" I ask

"Mmm, yeah I'm pretty sure." She says thoughtfully

"Ok, good. Do you have a phone I can call his....aunt?"

"Of course! I'll be right back and then you can call...whats her name again?"

"Lily" I say

"Yeah! That's it! You can call Lily and we can get your little brother down here." She hurriedly walks out of the room.

I lay back leaning on the hospital bed. I can't believe what has happened. Why my parents? Why could this happen to someone else. Wait thought sounded selfish! I don't wish death on anyone elses parents. Ugh! What's wrong with you Emily! Your gonna get through this! You have a little brother to take care of now! You need to be strong for him. He needs you now more than ever.

Oh no I forgot to ask her how long I was passed out. I guess I'll ask when she gets back. She is so nice. Thank God she was the one here when I woke up. Just then Allison walks in holding a phone.

"Do you know the number?"
"Yes."

"Here you go then. I'll be right outside if you need me ok."

"Ok, thank you."
She smiles at me and was about to walk out when I remember something.

"Wait! I have a question."

"Yes?"

"How long was I passed out for? You said earlier the hospital was going to put my brother into foster care if I didn't wake up because I was his only family left."

"Honey you were in a coma for a week..."

"A week?"
She nods

"Yeah, we were scared you wouldn't make it and that poor boy was gonna be adopted. Thank God Lily ran in when she did!"
My eyes start to water again. I'm so greatful for Lily. I can't beushe did that for us...for me. I love her so much I need to find a way to repay her. I will some how.

"Ok thank you. I'm going to call her now."
Allison nods and walks out closing the door behind her.

I dial the number into the phone and on the second ring I hear a familiar voice say

"Hello?"

"Hi, Lily it's Emily" I say my voice shaky.

"Oh my God Emily! Your awake! I've missed you so much! Don't ever do that to me again! Are you ok?! Do I need to come get you?!" She screams into the phone.

"Yeah I'm fine. I've missed you to. I don't know yet. They haven't told me I can leave yet but I'll ask. How's Alex is he ok? Can I talk to him?"

I answer all her questions greatful for the friend I have. Her and Alex are all I have now and I don't plan on losing either of them anytime soon.

"Yeah he's fine. He really misses you Emily. He's outside playing with Kayla right now, I'll go get him."

"Ok thank you. I miss him to."

I here Lily yell for Kayla and Alex to come inside for lunch and that someone was on the phone for Alex. Kayla is Lily's younger sister. She is 8 but her and Alex love to play together.

"Wello?" I hear Alex say into the phone. My eyes start to tear up when I hear his voice. He still gets his W's and H's mixed up and it's so cute.

"Hey, buddy! It's Emily. How are you baby?"

"SISSY!! I misses you sissy! Are you coming home?!" He screams

"I miss you to baby! And yeah I'm coming home soon ok just wait for me ok." I say to him

"Ok! Aunt Lily said we are gonna hafe a welcome back party when you get here are you excited!" He says excitedly I can here Lily in the background yelling...

"That was supposed to be a surprise munchkin!"
I laugh when I here my brother say oops.

"Yeah baby boy, I'm excited. Can I talk to aunt Lily now please?" I ask

"Yes. AUNT LILY SISSY WANTS TO TALF WIF YOU!!!" He yells, I'm assuming she's in another part of the house because next I hear

"OK IM COMING GIVE ME ONE SECOND!" I laugh at them and it just makes me miss them even more. I can't wait to go home.

"Hello?" Lily says

"I'm going to ask if I can leave today. Do you think I can get a ride to your place?"

"Of course! I'll bring Alex up there to see you and Kayla to. We have come to visit everyday except yesterday because I had to get ground pay bills and all that but I just wanted to let you know your not alone ok?"

"That sounds great and thank you so much Lily. You guys mean so much to me and thank you for all your help with Alex. How am I ever going to repay you?"

"You don't have to but if you really want to you can do my laundry for the next month and we can call it even." She says jokingly

"Deal!" I laugh

"Ok well I'll call you back later I have to get these kids ready to leave and I'm gonna go to your house to pack some clothes for and munchkin to stay at my house for a few days ok."

"Ok thank you so much."

"Your welcome. I love you bye." I hear the phone click and drift off into a much needed sleep.
