A little more than a year ago, a sleek, black, five-inch portable music player hit the market in France. And, as predicted, it was a hit.
For only 20€ (about 23 US dollars), you could own a fully-customizable, Bluetooth equipped smart-mp3 that could save nearly 1,000,000 songs and would give you recommendations based on your listening history. And, after a year, most teenage Parisians did. Some even spent more time on their double-T, or TouchTunes portable player, than their smartphones.
Playlist sharing took over social media. Just listening to someone's favorite songs suddenly seemed like an efficient way to peer inside their soul. And it became popular.
All in all, it was a pretty good time to live- up until you lost yours, or accidentally swapped with another person. Amidst the sea of people in Paris, it was going to prove nearly impossible for Adrien to regain his music player- but he refused to give up hope."Nino! Wait! Wh- What are you doing?" He called, confusion etching its lines all over his normally smooth features. Nino spun on his heel, whipping his head around to face the blond boy standing in the rain behind him.
"I'm leaving. I'm tired of you, Adrien. You're never cool to be around anymore. We could only put up with you for so long." Nino gestured around and behind him, where all of Adrien's so called friends stood.
The shock hit Adrien like a blow to the face. All he could manage to mutter was a simple, "Why?"
But Nino ignored him, fixing his red cap with finality. He shrugged. "You'll be fine. You should be used to being lonely by now, dude. We were never really your friends, anyway."
Without another word, he strolled off, not a care in the world. As if permanently ditching Adrien was just another check off of his to-do list.Adrien didn't say anything. Apparently, his friend life wasn't 'different' after all. It had also proven to be full of disappointment in the end. Just another thing I know how to deal with, he thought.
Just then, he caught sight of bright red in the corner of his eye. The kind of bright red that frequently showed up in his dreams and relived moments alike. The kind of bright red that meant one thing only- Ladybug. She walked over to him hesitantly- as though seeing him through the mask he had come to love.
"Chat Noir?" She questioned. "Are...are you okay?"He just looked up at her, into her blue eyes, not bothering to hide the sadness in his own.
"Will you stay?" He asked, simply. The superheroine seemed to know instantly what he was referring to- and instead of reassuring him, she paused, seeming to weigh the decision inside her mind.
It ripped the hole inside his chest even wider.
Finally, after a silence that had stretched eternities, she began her reply.
"I-"And, at that moment, Adrien shot up in bed, running his fingers through his hair.
What a nightmare. The revelation that he had even experienced a nightmare in the first place jolted him as he stood up, stretching. "I haven't had any of those since...since before I became a superhero," Adrien thought aloud. The reality of facing terrifying villains on a weekly basis had seemed to rid him of the nightly scares that he had once went through regularly.
He pondered the whole situation as he shuffled to the bathroom, preparing himself for the day."I don't know, kid. Maybe try some Camembert, it's a certified cure-all," Plagg offered, tossing half of the portion Adrien had allotted to him for the morning into his mouth as Adrien packed his bag for school.
