Water is one of the most important substances on earth. All the plants and animals must have water to survive on this earth.
I live in the capital of Nepal which is kathmandu. Monsoon is nearly here. Water is everywhere but still we are short of water. Everyday we open the daily news papers and read about the same issue again and again - and again.
Although Nepal is said to be standing on the 43rd position in terms of water resources globally but in a country like ours too there is the scarcity of water.Isn't it strange? It is obviously ironic.
Nepal has a considerable amount of available freshwater on Earth with more water reserves in the world. There are large number of glaciers and lakes in the highest mountain of the earth which feeds many rivers and streams that flows through Nepal's valleys. However, sadly, nearly 5 million inhabitants of Nepal do not have access to the safe drinking water.
The lack of infrastructure and the high level of pollution due to agricultural pesticides, fertilizers and wastewaters are the main cause and the problem of lack of water in Kathmandu. Climate change also pose a serious threat to the country since it directly affects the Himalayas.
The Problem of water access and sanitation worsened on April 25th, 2015 due to disastrous earthquake measuring 7.8 Richter scale. The number of affected citizens were more than 8 million people. The lack of water as well as food caused 2.8 million internally displaced persons and Kathmandu received thousands of people that fled from destruction.
But Kathmandu is suffering from water crisis partly due to the uncontrolled discharge of the industries, domestic waste and untreated sewage into its rivers and lakes.
The solutions for solving this problem could be that we should stop using the harmful pesticides and fertilizers that causes harms or destroys the water. I also think conducting various programs to educate people living here about the proper lifestyle and consumption.
In the areas where water is scarce and the rain is unpredictable, governments should work on inventing new water conservation technologies. Already, Nepali government is working on the new water project called 'Melamchi'. I think if this project turns out to be successful many other water conservation solutions would be introduced.
Improving irrigation also helps to close the gaps in demand and supply as well as improving agriculture practices.
Government should also develop and enact better policies and regulation in order to help its people to face the water crisis. They should address the pollution in the city as soon as possible and take preventive measures to mitigate it as human health is one of the most important things.
Nepali government should also control the population growth in the city as everyday 1 lakh people migrate from valley to kathmandu city which is causing a rapid population growth.
Water is for all and Maintaining these can finally reduce the water crisis leaving no one behind.
