4 Ways for International Students to Work in the US

As an international student who is in the US, you can't go out and get any job you want. Whether it may be to gain some work experience or for pocket money, there are some procedures you need to follow to get a job.

Before you start finding a job, contact the right person in your designated school to guide you through the steps.

The department of homeland security sketches four ways for international students to work legally in the US on an F1 Visa.

On-campus employment, off-campus employment, Curricular practical training (CPT) and Optional Practical training (OPT).

On campus employment is the type of work that takes place on campus related to their studies. It can be associated to research projects. You can also work somewhere like bookstore, library etc that is inside your campus.

Off-campus employment are jobs outside of your school and accessible only to F1 students who have done one full academic year of studies or with emergent circumstances such as increase in living cost, loss of financial assistance or on-campus employment, large medical bills not covered by insurance etc.

Curricular practical training or CPT is a part of your curriculum. It is intended to give you experience related to the field of study like an internship. CPT can be taken full time and you can also have one or more CPT authorization concurrently. But if you participate in full time CPT, you are not eligible for optional practical training.

Optional practical training or OPT refers to temporary employment related to your field of study with duration of 12 months. You can extend it to 24 months if you have a degree in one of the stem fields ( science, technology, engineering or maths). To be a desi opt, you must submit application to USCIS and get an approval.
