"Say something, Jess," I heard my mom say in the background.
"Hi Daddy!" My 7 year old voice sounded pure. It was easy to find the elation in the way I spoke. "Mommy and I wanted to make a video for your birthday! We really miss you. And we want you to be at home today, but Mommy told me you have to stay in the other place until Christmas." I rambled on and on, telling him how 2nd grade was going, and how our dog, Bruce, missed him-but not as much as I did-and basically anything I couldn't hold in until December. The video was almost over, and I whispered the last few lines, my 16 year old voice sounding rough and empty compared to the sweet little girl's.
"Goodbye, Daddy. I love you."
I watched the fuzzy video for the 13th time, wishing everything could go back to the way it used to be. My mom and I got the news three weeks after my 9th birthday, and his funeral was 5 days after that. I cried myself to sleep every night for a month. For my 10th birthday all I wished for a hug from my father.
Before I climbed into the back seat of my station wagon, I turned the camera off and carefully set it into the box in my passenger seat. It was easy to ignore the silent tears running down my face, it almost felt like a routine. I curled up with my blankets and forced myself to think of nothing but sleep. Afterall, I did have school in the morning.
Its a wonder, really, the things even your closest friends don't notice.
