It was a dark, stormy night in LaPush when Allison Uley's door began being assaulted by desperate knocking. Allison got out of bed and opened the door, she sighed in relief, seeing who it was, "Danielle, what are you doing here?"
The white woman kept her voice hushed, "Please let me in Allison, I'm being hunted. Markus is dead."
At the words of her brother's passing, Allison quickly ushered her sister-in-law inside, shut and locked the door, "What happened?"
Danielle Uley sat down clutching something rather large to her chest, but Allison could not tell what it was due to it being wrapped in a quilt. Sam crept downstairs due to the storm and front door waking him, but he kept quiet to hear the conversation between his mother and Aunt. Danielle finally caught her breath and explained, "A rival pack began to invade our lands and killed innocents without remorse or discretion. In retaliation, a group of humans heavily armed themselves and began killing us. Everyone associated with our tribe and the rival pack." She looked up into Allison's eyes, explaining the rest, "Markus and those who were left held off the hunters so that the women and children could escape. I don't know if anyone other than us escaped alive."
Allison then asked, "Us?"
Danielle nodded sadly and unwrapped the quilt to reveal two newborn babies, one girl and one boy. Danielle chuckled as the girl yawned and reached out with her arm before curling back up, "Allison meet your niece and nephew. The girl is named Juniper and the boy, Oliver."
Allison and Sam were mesmerized and in shock; a perfect mixture of joy and heartbreak. However both were knocked out of their trances by the baby girl opening her violet eyes up. Allison smiled, "Can I hold them?"
Danielle nodded, and carefully placed the twins in Allison's arms. Danielle then let tears escape her eyes, "Allison, I must ask something of you."
She looked up and asked, "What?"
"I need you to take care of them for me."
"What do you mean? We can raise them together."
Danielle shook her head, "No, I have to keep running. The hunters know my face and if I stay, their lives will be put in danger."
"I can protect you. This tribe can protect you."
Danielle cried a bit more, "I cannot stay, Allison. I do not wish to bring the same fate of my pack down upon yours. Just promise me you will raise them alongside Sam with the same values your husband and tribe grew up with. Please, you must promise me, that wolves or not, you will raise them to be strong and live happy lives."
Sam frowned at the strange words his aunt used. He had been told about the history of wolves, but he assumed in was a myth.
Allison nodded, "On the honor and memory of our history and your husband, I will raise them and protect them, whether they are white or Native American."
Danielle left out a sob of relief and gave her babies one last hug and kiss before disappearing out the door.
Only a month later did Allison get a call from a police station three states over, asking her to come and identify the body of her sister-in-law.
