Image of Darp.
"Raechell" A metallic voice says my name and my eyes open. Darp stands over me, his eyebrows raised. "Raechell are you sure you want this? Children are a lot to handle..." he doesn't look as concerned as he sounded to start with, if anything he's getting kind of...excited? "Yes Darp I want to make a child." If I had a heart it would be beating so fast right now it would be flying out of my chest. He jumps up out of his chair and grabs my hand, pulling me quickly to the door. "Where are we going?" I don't really care what his answer is. We could be going on another date by the incinerator for all I care. "To make a child!"
The lab door is automatic and slides open as we get to it, the tiny lasers in the doorway checking for bugs and viruses before letting us enter. The air is thick with sawdust and paint and heat so I switch off my breathing, smiling as darp rocks back and forth on his feet. A robot I don't recognises comes up to the counter to serve us, closely followed by a vampire I'm sure I've met before. I scan my memory files as darp talks. "we want to make a child!" he says it happily and clearly, like it isn't big news. The vampire raises an eyebrow and huffs, but the robot just stares. "Do you want to start from scratch or modify?" The robot is in a uniform so you can't tell what gender it is, but the voice is deep and thick. I recognise it but get no new notifications from my memory files as to who it is. Darp looks at me, tilting his face slightly. He always looks cute when he does that, even when I know he's hacking into me to read my current line of thought. "Do you have any bots we could look at to modify? Just to look?" The vampire starts walking away and the robot bends down to shuffle some papers under the desk. It's only when he vampire turns back around to look at us again that I realise we're supposed to be following him.
"Boy or girl?" The vampire has an accent and doesn't face us when he talks. He wears all black and his cloak trails on the floor behind him. "Girl." I answer without even thinking. Logically it would make more sense to have a boy and I hadn't even asked darp. What was I thinking? "Good choice." The vampire says nothing more after that and leads us carefully down the corridor, not getting his cape dirty and levitating over big puddles he can't miss. Suddenly he swerves to the left down a different corridor and I realise darp isn't with us. "He is waiting in the lobby." The bolt slides across from the door even though neither of us unlocked it. It slowly starts to creak open, and I get anxious. Then I see them.
There are multiple bots in the large dorm room, all chatting and laughing and doing impressions of different famous people from the earth years. They are projecting rude pictures onto walls and the younger ones are spelling out the longest words they know with letter cubes in a corner. All of the girls are interacting loudly with at least one other bot. All apart from two in the corner. Two girls are sat on a bed dressed all in black. They have their hair done to match but the are not twins, one has the build of a teen the other as a child. In human years they would probably be around 7 and 13. As I walk in the other girls glance at me and talk louder, hoping to get noticed and modified. The two on the bed in the corner don't even look up. "Nancy and Mary. They've been here the longest" The vampire gestors to the bed in what looks like distain "They come together. Most people want a boy and a girl or just one, you see?" I do see. I see two little girls that have given up hope and need a loving home. I see myself before I met darp. I see how much they hate it here and how much love i could give them. "We'll take them. Repaint and fixup their outfits, we want them done in an hour"
