diego watched from his locker as kimetrius and his group of friends laughed on about something, silently wishing that he was right there with him as his friends howled in laughter at whatever it was he just did or said.

over the years kimetrius and diego have changed a lot. kimetrius had hit a growth spurt and he was at least 5 inches taller than diego, despite being 2 years younger, and he had gotten a blonde streak in the middle of his hair - which looked like someone took a piss in the middle of his hair, but he thought it looked good, so whatever.

diego never hit that growth spurt that he thought he was going to hit as a kid. here he was, 17 years old and still 5'5, and could barely grow facial hair. most people mistook him for a girl, until he started talking. his lisp has only gotten worse at this point as well.

the biggest change was the fact that the two of them have grown apart as time went on. they were still cool with each other, and they still talked, but they were nowhere near as close as they were when kimetrius first moved across the street from him.

the first couple of years of them knowing each other they were inseparable. you couldn't think of one without the other. everybody knew that metri and diego were an iconic duo, and that was that.

things started to go south once diego started high school - which was kind of obvious, they went to different schools, with different people so they'd have less time to spend together so they naturally became less close.

when kimetrius started high school you'd think it would get better, but it actually ended up getting worse. kimetrius almost immediately became more popular and well liked as soon as he entered freshman year due to his more outgoing and personable nature. kimetrius was basically known as the class clown - not because of his jokes, because his jokes were still terrible, but moreso because of his antics.

meanwhile diego was still pretty much invisible. he wasn't really actively bullied, nobody jumped him or called him names, but it was moreso subtle shunning, like getting up when he sat at the same lunch table, or rolling their eyes and whispering when he walked the halls.

kimetrius never tried to intentionally shun diego - in fact, he still tried to keep in contact with him from time to time, and sometimes they'd still hang out in private during weekends, but it was clear that their close friendship was a thing of the past that he's outgrown.

which made it all the more sad that diego was practically in love with him.

he knew that kimetrius would never feel the same way, after all, he isn't gay, and he wasn't going to force him to be, or confess that he's literally been in love with him since he was 12. that would just make things awkward for everyone. still, he wished they could have at least still had been friends along the way.

he continued to watch kimetrius from his locker, wishing that he could look at him the way that he looked at the girl that was next to him amongst the crowd.

-

"you know what, i'm tired of you being so damn sad all the time. what's your type? i'm finna set you up."

"must be nice to be set up," jarad sighed as he picked at the cold fries on his styrofoam tray.

kimetrius was sitting with his friends at lunch as usual, and of course, diego wasn't one of them.

kimetrius used to invite diego to sit at lunch with him, but his friends don't really like diego that much, and they make sure to talk shit about him as soon as he leaves because of how awkward he is, and yes, kimetrius does try to stand up for him, but it's not like he could force his friends to like him, so it is what it is.
