Arriving uptown in minutes they quickly eat and head their separate ways still early in the day. Joey lives with his dad and brother which are not home in a rather small dimly lit apartment on the second floor of a building complex. He heads straight to his room which looks like a computer control center with monitors, equipment and conveniently a bed.
When not dumpster diving for parts and material for odd projects, he spends his spare time disassembling and reassembling nanobot micro-motherboards; the same kind that control the machines at the factory which reactivated.
The room is covered with concept art of devices and machines. Using a automated watch repair table he works on small ingenious devices some of which are illegal to possess. Joey is bent on staying a step ahead of the major corporations lock on everything. They control all aspect of society. The computer whiz is a very low key computer hacker.
Joey has questions about the reactivation of the machines and starts to contemplate while examining a Giantron’s micro-motherboard snuck out of the factory. It has the US Army insignia on the titanium casing. Joey uses the hacked motherboard for his juiced-up computer gaming rig. Half asleep he turns on the TV and the emergency broadcast system is announcing eminent threat warnings while simultaneously the gaming rig monitors activate.
Thundering noise rattles the building complex. Joey immediately go’s outside and sees people running and screaming. They are looking up at the sky and pointing. Over the downtown southern horizon explosions rock the city. There’s no time to run anywhere giant machines are destroying everything and made there way north.
Joey hasn’t spotted the machines but can hear them getting nearer fast until finally a wrenching noise of moving metal reveals a 700 hundred foot tall machine three blocks away with several others trailing not far behind with US fighter jets flying overhead. Joey is grabbed by neighborhood friend, Devon who is running east with a group of kids and women. “The police department is setting up a blockade a few streets away. They are severely unequipped to engage the machines," Devon.
Everyone frantically looks for shelter in surrounding buildings as the machines destroy everything in their path. All hell brakes loose when the machines finally reach the blockade. Joey tries to stay with his friend’s group but must find shelter immediately as what looks to be a crab-like giant mechanical octopus ripping through nearby buildings.
The blockade is pulverized in seconds. Joey runs to the nearest possible shelter onto the promenade of a glass and steel building. Running through the revolving doors and into the building seems like a bad decision it being constructed almost entirely of glass. Only a few people have sought shelter in here. Sprinting up an escalator to the main lobby floor with a street view, steel beams along the front windows provide a prefect cover if the roof collapses and a good vantage point to see what’s happening outside.Tremors caused by the claw like feet of a mechanical dinosaur rattles the brain. Debris is flying everywhere. That’s all that is visible underneath a bulking steel beam that doesn’t budge from the Giantron’s tremendous strikes wildly ripping apart sections of buildings. The machine heads the group stampeding through like a heard of wild elephants knocking down trees except these are megalithic monsters taking down whole buildings.
The bombardment happens fast and then the stampede is gone. Joey feels it is quickly safe to exit the destroyed structure and survey the situation outside finding a path of destruction. Everyone who survived the onslaught are in shock and awe but not shaken. These are resilient people. Joey friend’s group are few, many are missing. They soon unite with a new group and decide to head to a fallout shelter downtown. Power is has not fully gone out in the city. Only priority structures have electricity. Joey heads to the apartment before it gets dark. Lucky to have a place left with power also. He is able to contact his father who is assessing damage to the factory and brother is safe and secured at his job site. The Giantrons also took control of the power station in the lower east side, charging up and draining it of electricity before destroying the facility.
