The way life moves at times, makes a man to feel like he's walking on clouds, breeze. Like he has no control of his movements. Such was so now for Joseph Bryn. He was living in a surreal world, surrounded by surreal objects.
The Bryn family that had just lost a fellow loved one were still mourning, and had finally gotten to the scene of their mother and wife's murder, after Kat's little display of rebellion and stubbornness about going.
Joseph drove in through the luxurious gates of Western Beach. He searched for a space to park in the maze of cars and people moving around, near the scene of the murder. They were mostly forensic dudes and Police and other people that should be there, running around.
'Hey watch it!'
Someone had yelled so loud that Josh had heard it through his tinted, winded-up windows. He winded the widow down, looking at the psycho that had hit his car in anger and yelled at him to watch where he was going; whereas he was actually watching where he was going. He kept on looking at Josh and his car and the kids behind it,then finally maintaining eye contact with him.
Josh wanted to look away and drive off, but what caught his attention was the way the guy looked. He had cuts, deep wounds on his hands, tattered clothes, worn out shoes, and lastly, but definitely not the least, rough, dirty, unkept hair. The guy finally broke off eye contact, but not before smirking mischievously at Josh.
Joseph frowned, but kept on driving anyway. Crazy! He thought in his mind.
Kat simply rolled her eyes at the ordeal.
Neal was sleeping besides Kat, after several hours of crying.
'Okay kids, let's get down to this.' Josh told his kids as Kat woke Neal up from his slumber.
The trio walked forward to the entrance of the hotel. The Policemen who served as bodyguards stood at the entrance, guarding it like bouncers. They sighted Josh and his crisp suit and shoes, etcetera, with the kids following behind him. One of them raised his chin at Josh, ready to attack.
"Now where d'ya think ya goin' to, huh?" He still held his chin up, arms folded across his chest. Josh narrowed his eyes at the policeman, and glanced at the rest of them.
'I'm Joseph Bryn, the husband to the woman that was killed here.' When Josh noticed that the men weren't budging or moving for him to enter, after all of them gave him disbelieving looks and eyed his kids, he said, 'here's my I.D. card,' handing it over to them. 'As you can see,' Josh continued, 'my name on the card is Joseph Bryn. Jolie Bryn's husband. And as far as I know, the family should be here, if they want to, to meet the investigative team. So now, can you move?'
The men dropped their folded arms and interrogative looks, handing Josh back his I.D. card. Josh sighed with content after walking through the door.
The hotel was busy, filled up with hotel workers and a bunch of government agents. Josh walked to the counter, seeing the receptionist. He had been told earlier to do so, and when he saw her, he introduced himself. The woman told him to go upstairs, giving him directions with the kids closely behind him.
Kat scrunched up her nose at the foul smell of blood. She had never seen such scene before in reality. Paramedics moving around, police everywhere looking for evidence...
The trio got to the last floor upstairs. They saw a woman with blonde hair dressed in black jeans, boots, and a black shirt. She bit her lip as she spoke to a policeman. It was obvious that they were in a deep conversation.
Josh walked toward to meet her. 'Excuse me,' he said, stopping her in the middle of her talk, 'are you Ray Adams?' She took her eyes off the cop and stared at Josh.
'Yes, I am. And you are, Sir?' 'I'm Joseph Bryn. I'm the husband of Jolie Bryn.' Josh stretched his hands out for a handshake. Realisation showed in Ray's eyes. 'Oh. I see Sir. We've been expecting you.' She said, returning the handshake and giving him a small smile. Josh forced one back. 'We would've been here since, but for a minor setback at home,' he said, glancing at Kat, who in turn cleared her throat in guilt.
Josh's eyes wandered to the cop beside Ray. 'Henry Brown,' he said, nodding and touching the tip of his cap. Josh nodded too.
Ray sighed. 'Well Henry, since the family's here, we should start our own investigation.' Henry nodded to that. 'This way guys,' Henry said, motioning to a door leading to another room.
Kat kept staring at him. She couldn't take her eyes off him. There was something deeper than explanation in those deep green eyes. She felt there was something more to this cop who acted like he was a simple person doing his job. She furrowed her brows in thought.
They entered the room, which was painted gray, and totally cleared off of materials in it, except for a long, wide table and some chairs. It seemed to have been a store room before it became this interrogating room.
'Have a seat Sir,' Ray said, motioning to the chairs in the room. She noticed the kids; a boy and a girl. The girl, a pretty red-head, and the boy, a brown haired cutie. They looked very sad, sorrow written in their eyes. Ray really felt bad for them.
She smiled at Kat when the girl caught her staring. Ray and Henry sat down too. Ray smiled at Kat again. 'What's your name, sweetie?' She said kindly to Kat. 'Katherine. But everyone calls me Kat,' she replied.
'Okay. So what's your name little cutie?' Ray turned to Neal, who turned away from staring at the room and Henry. Henry had just been quiet all along.
'Neal.'
'Oh,' came from Ray. 'Okay.'
'You have beautiful kids.'
Josh looked at the direction the voice came from, and in the faint light he sighted deep green eyes the colour of fine grass. He hadn't spoken since, so everyone was kinda surprised.
'Thank you.' Josh said, as Henry nodded in reply.
He adjusted in his seat, facing Josh and his kids. 'Now that we've gotten to know each other, can you tell us,' he stretched his hands to him and Ray, 'all what you know?'
He caught Kat staring and looking uneasy. 'Hey, guys, don't be scared okay? Look at this as pouring your hearts and thoughts out. I promise we won't bite,' Henry declared, smiling at Kat, flashing white teeth.
Ray clapped her hands together once. 'Okay. So from the beginning guys. Anything you wanna share?'
