It was a normal day for one Harry Potter. His best friends rat runs away, followed by Ron being attacked by a giant dog and dragged into a tunnel under the tree that tries to kill you, before his other best friends cat freezes the tree, allowing Harry and Hermione to follow after Ron, when the dog suddenly becomes the mass murderer hell bent on killing him, and their Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher turns against them. Yup, one totally normal day.
As Ron stupidly muttered to himself, "We're going to die." Over and over again, Hermione found herself being the voice of reason, only just being able to stop a now wandless Harry from charging head on at them. "Harry, stop! He's a werewolf, he'll rip you to shreds! He's been helping Sirius get into the castle, he also wants to kill you!" Having your back turned against your enemy is a bad idea, but when it's to stop your friend from charging to his death, Hermione thought it was a price she would have to pay. She was pushing him backwards with all her might, yet Harry did not want to stay still. After about 3 minutes of this sort of battling, with Remus and Sirius looking on bemused, Harry started to calm down. Seizing her chance, Hermione turned back around, using herself as a human shield to protect Harry. "You will have to go through me to get to Harry!" Sirius simply laughed at her.
"Only one will die tonight!" Hermione, thinking this would be her last night, steeled herself for something she thought she would never do. Ron started shouting at her, "Preparing to die is not wha..." but was cut of as Hermione spun herself round yet again and kissed Harry. Harry was not expecting this, but still returned the kiss within a second of it being administrated. When they broke apart, they were both practically radiating happiness. As Ron was left staring at his best friends, Scabbers managed to slip out his grasp and onto the floor. Remus acted immediately, casting a charm on the rat that even Hermione didn't recognise. What surprised Harry more though, was when the rat started growing into a man, a man Harry recognised from the photo album Hagrid gave him. "Peter!" Sirius could not contain his glee that his godson recognised the traitor, and knew that he was safe from Harry's wrath. "He's the one who betrayed your parents Harry, and he faked his death!" Harry started angrily towards Peter, but Hermione got their first. Aiming a kick at his head, everyone could here his nose break with a sickening crack. "Right, let's get him up to school so we can set Sirius free. Harry, please restrain yourself from killing anyone, that's the dementors job."
As they reached the top of the tunnel, they could see Snape heading towards them, wand drawn and about to curse Sirius into oblivion. However, Harry and Hermione beat him to it, and the potions master was flung a few feet backwards. Right at this time, a certain round, grey lump of rock that orbits the Earth revealed itself from behind the clouds. Some people call it the full moon, but to Remus, it was his worst nightmare. The werewolf transformed before their eyes, before a giant, black dog leaped into it's chest and rolled away. At this point a certain Peter regained consciousness and Wormtail scurried away again. Harry and Hermione decided to leave Ron with the unconscious Snape, and ran of in pursuit of the two wolf like creatures. A howl in the distance beckoned to Remus, while Sirius stumbled of to a lake he knew well. Upon following him, Harry and Hermione found a sight that terrified the both of them. Over a hundred dementors were circling Sirius, who had collapsed. Thinking of his and Hermione's first kiss, Harry came forward and offered his protection to Sirius, but 100 dementors is too much for anyone, and he soon found himself blacked out as he fell down next to his godfather, but catching a glimpse of a silver stag and doe erupting from the other side of the lake before finally passing out.Harry awoke to a face full of brown bushy hair. He tried to push himself up, and Hermione let him know who was there as she kissed him. "Alright, you two! We need to get some chocolate in you." Madam Pomfrey came bustling in with the largest cube of chocolate Harry had ever laid eyes on. "Miss, we need to see professor Dumbledore!" Madam Pomfrey was having non of this argumentative attitude from Harry, and pushed him down onto the bed before ramming a chunk of chocolate into his throat. "Miss, where is Dumbledore?" Madam Pomfrey was getting fed up. "He will be here soon, so eat this chocolate. I'm sure he'll want to ask you what happened down there. And Sirius is about to receive the dementors kiss, so don't worry about him." Harry almost chocked on his chocolate hearing that last bit, just as Fudge, Snape and Dumbledore walked in. "Very well done Severus, protecting the students from the murderer. Order of Merlin, I should think, first class." Snape was looking very smug at the prospect of an award, especially since he was being given it by the Minister for Magic. Hermione, however, had more pressing matters to deal with. "Professor, he's innocent, Peter's alive and he was the one who betrayed Harry's parents!" Fudge looked down on her, almost pitying her. "That's a very strong confundus charm Snape, we'll have to add services to the school for protecting the students. I'll have Black for this." Harry was absolutely seething at the incompetence shown by the short man with the lime green bowler. "Dumbledore, you believe us don't you?" Fudge was still chattering away to Snape as they left, and Dumbledore was left to answer them in a normal voice. "Of course I do, Harry. But we can't save him now. If only we had more time." Harry was dumbfounded by the lack of action from his role model, Hermione though gasped as if realising something. "Three turns should do the trick, miss Granger. Farewell for now." As soon as the door shut behind Dumbledore, Hermione pulled up a golden chain from around her neck and with it came a sort of hourglass. "Harry, come here, hold on tight and make sure the chain is touching your neck." He didn't really need to hold tight, but Hermione had no intention to deprive herself of contact with Harry. "This is a time-turner, it lets us go back in time. One thing, don't be seen. Understand?" As Harry nodded his acceptance, she turned the hourglass three times, and everything around them started reversing, until it stopped in brighter sunshine than before. "Harry, where were we three hours ago?" Harry had to ponder a moment before remembering. "We were going to Hagrid's, maybe we need to rescue Buckbeak to escape with Sirius on!" Hermione grabbed his hand and headed of down to Hagrid's little hut, when she suddenly pulled Harry into a broom cupboard and closed the door. "That's us! Be quite." Was all Hermione managed to say before they very clearly heard their own footsteps from in the hall. When they were gone, Hermione grabbed Harry's hand again and pulled him out of the hall and into the grounds, were they sought cover in the forest right outside the hut. Harry didn't mind being dragged around half the school, after all, it was Hermione who was dragging him. After they watched themselves leave, they made sure the executioner spotted Buckbeak before heading into the house so they wouldn't think Hagrid set him free, before untying him and leading him into the forest with ferrets. There they decided what to do next. Harry, however, had some shocking news. "I think I saw my father, Hermione."
"That's impossible, he's dead."
"I know, but he cast a patronus that saved us at the lake."
"Harry, it can't have been."
"Can I just see?"
"Oh, fine. But remember, don't be seen!"
With that they started their walk towards the lake, and sat on the opposite side to where they collapsed. They sat there chatting for a bit, before Harry brought up what was on his mind. "Um, Hermione?"
"Yes?"
"You know what happened in the shrieking shack?"
"Which bit?"
"Ermm, the bit where you kissed me."
"What about it?"
"So you definitely meant to do that?"
"Yes?"
"Well, I thought, maybe, are we a couple now, or..?"
"We can be if you want to be."
Harry took a deep breath.
"Hermione, would you like to be my girlfriend?"
Her squeal of delight made Harry assume the answer was yes. That, and the fact he was being very enthusiastically kissed. It made Harry feel as if he could cast the patronus charm and he'd just disappear before remerging all silver. This struck Harry dumb. "Hermione, I feel as if I could repel all those dementors away! I did see a stag and a doe, do you think we cast them?"
Hermione thought for a bit, before nodding her encouragement. As Sirius was now at the lake, Harry went through how to do the charm. "You just focus on a happy memory, and say 'expecto patronum', got it?"
"Do you think that just then counts as happy?"
"Hermione, I'm absolutely ecstatic!"
They waited a couple of seconds until they saw Hermione faint, and that was when Harry shouted, "Now!" and two corporeal patroni galloped at the dementors, scattering them in every direction. Having just saved their own lives, Harry and Hermione turned to each other to kiss, and only broke it when they heard footsteps to alert them that Snape was walking down. They stole into the forest, and watched as there own bodies were placed onto stretchers before being levitated towards the castle, with Sirius floating along with his head flopping uncontrollably. Hermione had an idea. "Everywhere in the castle is dark, if we wait until we see a window light up, we can fly Buckbeak up there and unlock the window to allow Sirius to climb on and fly into a tower, where we can then get in and head to the infirmary! Does that sound like a plan?" Harry nodded his agreement, and it was a couple of minutes later that he spotted a window lighting up. "Found him, I'll climb on, then help you on." As Harry hoisted Hermione into the position behind him, she wrapped her arms tightly around his waist before whispering in his ear, "Just a precaution." A word later and they were flying towards the place they knew Sirius was being held. Usually, flying had a terrible effect on Hermione. However, she felt totally at ease. Perhaps it was because they were on a hippogryph, not a broom, or that they had an actual goal, but she knew it was probably because Harry was here. 'If Harry's here, I'll be safe' is her motto after all. They were soon at the window though, a quick alohomora and Sirius was behind her. It wasn't as comfortable, but she was still wrapped tightly around Harry. When they dismounted at the astronomy tower, they said a quick goodbye to Sirius, because they needed to be back in the infirmary in about 5 minutes. They arrived just as Dumbledore was closing the door. "We did it sir!"
"I have no clue what you're talking about, Harry ."
"Sir?"
"Yes miss Granger?"
"Are we gone yet?"
"I should think so miss Granger. Now go and eat some chocolate."
They entered just in time to see themselves disappearing, and kissed each other before heading of to their separate beds. Just in time, because Madam Pomfrey came storming in to administer more chocolate. They both ate it without hesitation.A couple of minutes later, Snape stormed into the room, looking utterly murderous. "Potter! What did you do?"
"Sir?"
"You had something to do with Black's escape! I know it!"
"My godfather's escaped sir?"
"Severus! This is an infirmary! Get out! Stop yelling at my patients! They've had a rough night!"
Snape seemed to be livid, whether at the fact Sirius escaped, the loss of his awards, or both, no one was quite sure. At this point, Fudge intervened.
"Severus if you do not leave I shall have to warrant an arrest order! You yourself said they had been confunded, I do not need you to worsen the affect!" As Snape left, both teens turned around to grin at each other.
