Several people said hi to me on my way to math class. I smiled back at them and waved. Random people I don't know barely ever said anything to me, maybe they know I have snacks. I brushed it off and continued to room 4, Mrs. Mackels classroom.
I made it in and took my assigned seat near the front of the room. I opened my newly bought pack of gum and popped a piece in my mouth. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket, so I pulled it out to see my mom texting me; 'okay sweetie, have a good day at school,' in response to my earlier message.
'I'll try. What are your plans for today?' I asked her, starting a conversation in the short amount of time I had before the bell rang.
'Tom and I are gonna go out and get lunch later.' She answered. Tom was her boyfriend of 2 years. He didn't live with us or anything, but he hangs out a lot and he's really nice.
'That's cool.' I sent.
'K get back to doing your school stuff. I love you.'
'I love you too,' and with that the bell rang and I slid my phone back into the pocket of my jeans.
Mrs. Mackels stepped up to the front of the class, asking for everybody's attention. I stared at her and pretended to listen, but I couldn't help but think of Kyllee and her plan to get Jared to date her.
She went to the same middle school as me two years ago, but for freshman year she switched districts and left me alone at Fillen Silla. During her first year of high school she did the same thing she is doing to Jared to a different guy, and it worked, but she asked for my help. She had me text the dude a bunch of good things about Kyllee, and he ended up liking her. They dated for the rest of last year until this year when Kyllee transferred to Fillen Silla to go to school with me again. He broke up with her because apparently he didn't like long-distance relationships, even when they live less than 2 miles away from each other.
In my opinion, I think he was just a player. And that's exactly what I think about Jared. But Kyllee moved on from the last guy within a month and found herself crushing on Jared. They talk a lot and I thought they had a genuine bond, but then he goes off with a different girl--Sophia--and Kyllee isn't gonna take that without a fight. I could try to stop her from breaking them up, but I would just be wasting breath. When Kyllee wants something, she gets it. And that's what I admire about her, but at the same time it bugs me.
Sometimes I wish she would just let people have their own opinions on people and live their lives how they want without her making them feel a certain way, but if she wants to do it I don't mind, it's just not my way of going about things.
I blew a large bubble with my gum and it popped with a loud noise, making most of the class look over at me, including the teacher. The gum was stuck on my lips and I scraped it off with my teeth until it was gone.
"My bad guys," I laughed.
"Olivia, I don't want anymore distractions from you." Mrs. Mackels said sternly.
"Sorry," I replied. She continued teaching.
I felt a few buzzes go off from my phone, but I ignored them for now. Before I knew it the bell rang for second period and I got my stuff together and left. My next class was with Mr. Mackels, Mrs. Mackels husband, and his classroom was right across the hall. Room 5.
I fist bumped Mr. Mackels as I walked in and I chose a seat towards the back. I liked Mr. Mackels more than Mrs. Mackels, he was more outgoing and funny. He wasn't so harsh on students and he let us sit wherever we wanted. After a few minutes Kyllee walked in and sat next to me. We had this class together.
"I hate this class," she complained as she opened up her science notebook, getting ready to take notes. I got mine out and opened it to the next clean page.
"You hate every class," I pointed out. She nodded in response, along with a heavy sigh.
The bell rang and Mr. Mackels began his lesson. I tried taking notes on only the important stuff, but I always wrote down the wrong shit. By the end of his lesson we a had a mini quiz to test our knowledge based on what notes we took, and I got 5 out of 12 correct.
"Dude, you did terrible!" Kyllee teased, leaning over to see my paper.
I looked over at her paper and she didn't even do the work. I rolled my eyes.
"I'm hungry as hell," she said to change the subject.
"Lunch is next." I reminded her.
"Okay class," Mr. Mackels began, "did you all do the homework that's due?"
A monotone wave of 'yes's came from the class, Kyllee and I stayed silent. Mr. Mackels collected the papers from everybody, shaking his head at Kyllee because she never did her work, and looked disappointed at me. I usually got my work done but this time it just didn't happen.
"Are you gonna go Kyllee on me, Olivia?" He asked, referring to the never doing homework.
I shook my head, "nope."
"Good." He walked away.
The class ended then Kyllee and I walked together to lunch. We sat at the table and neither of us ate lunch, we just sat and chatted about random stuff. One of the staff members that was working in the cafeteria came up behind me and tapped my shoulder.
"Olivia?" She asked, and I turned around.
"Yeah?"
"You're getting picked up for the day, get your stuff and go to the office." She informed me, smiling and walking away.
"Wait, where are you going?" Kylee asked.
"I don't know," I answered, checking my phone.
No notifications.
"Okay, I gotta go. See ya later." I said, giving her a hug. I picked up my binder from the table and walked through the halls, making my way to my locker.
I got my backpack out and put my binder inside of it, putting it on my back and walking to the office. I walked inside and saw Tom sitting in a chair, fiddling with his jacket sleeves.
"Hey," I said to get his attention. He looked up and smiled, then turned towards the office lady and nodded.
"I already signed you out, kiddo, let's go." He said while standing up. His voice seemed to crack as he spoke, and once he walked closer to me I could see his eyes were red. He had been crying.
My chest began to pound and I felt a blood rush to my head, my hands and legs shaking. Anxiety filled my body as Tom and I walked out of the high school and got into his car. I got in the passenger seat, looking around to find nobody. Tom sat in the drivers seat and began driving away from the school.
"What's going on?" I asked, finally able to get a word out.
"Your mom got in a car crash. She's in the hospital."
