Jenna woke up to a warm embrace enveloping her. She smiled to herself. They may not have mated yet, but Jean did what she had promised; she was making it up to her. She had been attentive, caring, and sweet towards her, in and out of their bedroom. The woman's hands would linger around hers, always checking up on her whenever she arrived from Veil & Velvet.
She tried to untangle herself from the embrace and found it impossible as the woman pulled her closer, feeling the woman breathe in against the back of her neck. She turned around and saw her other half smiling, eyes still closed. The woman leaned forward and placed a kiss on her forehead.
"Hi," Jean said as she opened her eyes. Jenna bit her lip as she heard the softness in her voice and saw her blown pupils.
"Hi," she greeted back as she snuggled closer to her, taking in her sun-scented skin. Jean's warmth brought a sense of calm to her and something more. Unlike other vampires, who were cold to the touch, Jean—like Taylor—was warm. Her mate leaned forward, and she wasted no time catching her lips with hers. It was an innocent kiss until Jean nipped on her lower lip, making her let out a breathless gasp, and the brunette used the opportunity to invade her mouth.
Jenna pulled her other half over her, and the woman willingly settled between her thighs as she tangled her fingers in her hair, earning a low moan from the hybrid. Jean left her lips and began traveling down to her jaw, her tongue darting on her earlobe, and something began to form at the pit of her stomach—a certain warmth that ignited her undead veins. She couldn't help but let out a moan when she felt Jean move her hips against hers.
"Jean," she whispered as the brunette put her hands inside her shirt, trailing her fingers over her skin. Jenna felt her shirt rip when they both heard a loud explosion from outside. There was a flash of anger in her other half's eyes, and just like that, she was out on the balcony. She couldn't stop herself from letting out a frustrated groan. She followed Jean, who was standing rigidly with her eyes wide open.
"What's happening?" She asked as she stood beside her mate.
"Humans," Jean murmured before turning to her. "Stay here, Jenna." Her tone sounded more dominant than usual, making her flinch as it drew out a memory she had long buried.
She watched as her other half went and took her twin swords from the rack in their room. In a swift motion, Jean quickly got dressed as she walked towards their bedroom door.
"I'm coming with you."
"No," Jean said firmly without turning back, her voice cold and full of authority it sent an unbidden memory. Her other half must have sensed her unease, and Jenna found herself in the vampire's embrace. Jean kissed her softly on the lips and stared into her eyes. "I need you here, Jenna, where you're safer."
"But—"
"No buts. I'll be back, okay?" The woman cupped the side of her face and took her for a deep kiss, taking her imaginary breath away and leaving her in a daze. And just like that, her other half was gone. She immediately ran towards the door and tried to open it, hoping to follow Jean despite the woman's protest, but it didn't budge. She tried again, but there seemed to be a force pulling against her.
A spell, she thought, and she was a bit surprised at the idea. Jenna knew there would be surprises when she found out she was mated to a Knightley, an ancient vampire clan, but she didn't expect Jean to know such spells. She was still a young vampire, not even close to Jenna's own age.
Another explosion took her out of her head, making her snap her head in the direction where it came from. She ran towards the balcony and saw events unfold.
A small army of armed men was standing still just beyond the gate while Taylor, Jean, and several vampires stood on the other side, their weapons drawn, gleaming under the moon. Jenna looked back at the humans as they began to move towards the gate, planting bombs, but before they could plant them entirely, an arrow shot past the gate, hitting the ground and exploding like a flash grenade in hopes of slowing them down. But it didn't. In fact, it barely had any effect on them. She watched from the balcony as Taylor's weapon-wielding hand burst into flames, engulfing Bloodlust. The ground shook as she struck the ground with her weapon.
