When I was young, my mom use to tell me fairy tales.

She told me about Cinderella, and Snow white.

She told me about the evil stepmother and the evil queen.

What she didn't tell me, was that evil and the monsters from the books were actually real.

When my mother passed away I had to learn everything the hard way.

It was the day I turned 16.

And that's were the first chapter of my life ends and the next one begins.

It was a cold and snowy day, that December 17th.  It snowed, snowed so much the night before that school was canceled.  I was ecstatic of course it was my birthday and there was no school, my mom even called into work that day so she could stay home with me.

We had a great time just relaxing around the house joking with one another.  Until my mom went to go pick up the cake she called into our little towns bakery three hours before.  I tried to tell her that she didn't have to, that it was too late, it was only 7:PM, but it was already pitch black outside, only Illuminated by the street lamps down the sidewalk.

But she didn't listen to me.  She just smiled and said it wouldn't take long as she walked out our apartment door.  An hour later I heard a knock on the door, when I opened it I saw two uniformed police mean who said I needed to come down to the station with them, when I said I needed to wait for my mother they just gave me grim looks and led me from the apartment to their car.

When we got to the police station they led me straight to the autopsy room and asked me to see if I knew who this woman was.  It looked like she was mauled by a bear, I didn't think I knew her.  But as I looked closer at the poor woman's body, it suddenly hit me.  I knew exactly who this woman was.

She was my mother.
