The pebbles were damp and shiny, illuminating the road as if there were Stars. The dogs and the unwanted people littered the alleyway. the brick walls were dirty and the floor was no different. the people here carried scars mentally and physically whilst sleeping on newspaper and cardboard boxes. some had small cubbys others only have some paper. me, I was alone and new to this neighbourhood. i was another London orphan to them. a single boy with bruises, dirt and not a single possession. I scanned around the alley for a place, a home of sorts. while I looked silently a dog came up to me. it's fur soggy and brown and it's teeth sharp as nails but I knew it did not mean harm. it just starred at me, as if analysing me. it eventually gave up and walked away. the rain returned, uncaring for us beneath it. I ran towards an empty spot crouching. nobody cared I took up this space and I'm going to have to get use to it. I closed my eyes listening to the pitter patter of the rain. i heard the cries of children and the sobs of the alley. I was tired, too tired to stay awake, soon all the sounds were muffled and I soon got enveloped by sleep. it was mere seconds before something awoke me from my calm state. surprised I yelped. a familiar face looked at me the dog came closer completely unaware I was asleep. it's eyes were friendly and calm despite his appearance. I sit up and patted the space next to me, he gladly took the offer. now I wasn't alone, I have a friend, someone to talk to. he couldn't talk back or hug or help me a lot but he could listen and that's all I need now.
Forgetting all about my tired state I pat my new found friend and notice his injured leg. the brown and red mixture sends shivers down my spine. I looked at the dog his eyes held no pain or worry his eyes were happy. maybe this dog was alone, maybe he was alone for too long and even though he's in pain he's happy that he has a companion, he's a lot like me. deciding to help I look through a nearby Bin to find a dirty and used cloth, I washed it in a puddle and ran back towards the dog. I patted him once more before placing the cloth on his injury. he growled a bit before realising I was helping him. I continued wrapping it around his leg earning a whine or two. Once I finished I stood up and motioned for him to follow me, he obeyed my order. maybe I should name him? I looked over at the dog. I guess it would be better for it to have a name.
"Do you want a name boy."
He barked at me a visually happy about the idea.
"What about Charlie?"
He growled at me, I'm guessing that's a no.
"Freddy?"
He growled once again. I was thinking in my head about what I should call him. there's so many names but most of then don't seem to fit him.
"What about sandy?"
He didn't growl but he didn't bark. I looked over at him awaiting his answer. eventually he barked pleased with the name.
"Ok sandy, we better find some food."
He barked and started walking out of the alley way I followed sandy out onto the pathway. The bustle of the city was far away from here so we couldn't go there. but there was an old mince shop a few blocks away. we went to the back of the shop and peaked through a high window. there were multiple pigs hanging on large silver hooks. To me this was utterly disgusting but to sandy it was probably considered lunch. I scanned around seeing if there was anything I can eat. that was when I spotted a few large sausages near the counter. I then stopped looking in the shop and started looking for a way in. the high window is too small and there was no chimney I could climb down. i was staring at the window wondering if I could fit when sandy started barking. I looked over to see that he was barking at a hole in the door way. I crouched down to inspect the hole better. The wood seemed to be brittle here, I could probably make it big enough for me to fit.
"Good work, boy!"
I then kicked the wood around the hole a few times before it cracked open. the smell of meat and old blood washed over me as I crawled through the hole.
"Come on boy!"
Sandy scurried under the hole but half way through he managed to get stuck. he was struggling and wriggling around trying to free himself.
"Hahahaha!"
He stopped squirming around at looked up at me.
"hahahaha, maybe you shouldn't eat sandy. it seems your already fat enough."
He growled at me
"I'm sorry, let me help you."
I grabbed his front paws and pulled him out. once that was done I was panting and wheezing for air. I looked around me looking for the sausages I saw earlier.
"There!"
I pointed to the sausages. sandy went ahead of me when we ran over to the counter.
"Hey, look there's even a few meaty bones in the bin over here."
I grabbed a few bones out of the bin. most of which still had plenty of meat left. I threw one at sandy and he caught it with his mouth. he started chewing on the bone hungrily. I grabbed a sausages of different flavours. I'm not sure what flavours but they were different minces and spices inside each of them. I grabbed 2 more bones from the bin and placed them in a nearby basket.
"Come on sandy lets go before the owner finds us!"
That's when the click of a lock was heard and both me and sandy looked over to see a man standing there with a bat in his hand.
"My, my, my, what do we have here? 2 dirty no good thieves."
He was waving the bat around teasingly as he neared us. In a quick move I took sandies bone and threw it at the man.
"Run!"
I shouted. sandy dashed towards the hole and so did i. Sandy went first and thankfully he managed to get out without getting stuck.
"That was a nasty trick you thief"
I pushed the basket out of the hole and managed to slip myself threw. My heart was pounding in my chest as if it was going to explode. I grabbed the basket and started to walk away stumbling a lot. the man looked as if he was going to kill me! I sighed relieved that it was over. then a massive bang was heard when the door behind slammed open.
"Come back here, you rotten thief!"
I looked back and saw the man standing there face red and clearly angry. he pointed the bat at me when he shouted. he started running towards me. I ran as fast as I could. the pebbles were hard against my feet and I was still tired from before so I couldn't really run.
"Run sandy, run!"
Sandy dashed ahead but still stayed close enough for me to know where he was, perhaps he was guiding me. the evening sky was at its dimmest. the sun was barley out but it wasn't night just yet. the darkness was looming in, onto the alley. making it hard to tell where to turn. none the less, I still ran as fast as I could. I looked behind me to see that the butcher was still chasing me. I looked back to see sandy turn left.i followed sandy to the left alley way but once I turned the corner he managed to disappear. there was a brick wall standing in my way. I looked around for sandy until I heard a bark from above. Sandy was standing at the top of a staircase. I raced up the staircase and hid. the butcher came into view down below. he looked around confused. angry he threw the bat at the ground and started stomping on it. it was hard not to laugh at this sad sight.
"DIRTY, NO GOOD, STINKIN THIEVES!"
he shouted.
Me and sandy left the staircase and backed up to see the view of London. The chimneys filled with smoke and the morning evening sky now past. it was dark and small lights could be seen around the city. although nearly blind by how dark it is I walked around the rooftop looking for a way down besides the staircase, Sandy was looking too. soon I gave up and sat away from the staircase on the ledge of the roof. sandy came and sat next to me. I could still hear that man yelling at the top of lungs screaming words better left untold. my eyes soon felt heavy and at that moment I remembered that I didn't have any sleep yesterday since sandy awoke me. I laid the basket down on the opposite side of me and dozed off into a peaceful slumber.
