~Rumble Rumble Rumble~
“Wh-wha-at….?”
I lazily woke up, rubbing my eyes to remove of any of the remaining muck. I was oblivious to what woke me up. I was pretty much more concerned over the pain that shot through my body. My backed ached from sleeping on the dirt floor, and my eyes were puffy and red from the lack of sleep.
Yes, I was a slave. I was sold into slavery when I was 13 by my idiot parents who never really cared for me. I worked on this cotton farm for 5 years and now I’m currently 18. This annoyance of a farm was located in the contradicting outskirts of the beautiful city of Pompeii.
“Sydney. Wake up! The master’s coming!!” my only friend, May, warned me.
Oh, I thought to myself. May woke me up. I could’ve never been more mistaken in my life.
“Alright, alright, I’m coming.” I weakly replied.
Just then, the master came bursting in and handed us two the list of chores to do, and leaving just as quickly.
“Okay, I’ll take the groceries and you take the laundry.” I said to May, her nodding in response.
I began organizing a list of things to buy in my head while sprinting to the city. Master did not like waiting. Rumbling snapped me out of my thought in mid-stride. I felt something wrong happening. I had spoken too soon. All around me, I felt more shaking. I was already deep within the gates of Pompeii, when a pine-tree like shaped cloud started emerging from Mt. Vesuvius. “That’s odd…. I never knew mountains smoked” I thought out loud.
Just then, a jumble of the hot “mountain” swiped through the area where May and the farm were located.
“NO!!!” I shrieked.
Only later would I find out that that was no “mountain”, but something scientists would call a “volcano”.
In the blink of an eye, ominous clouds overcastted Pompeii. Only, these weren’t NORMAL clouds; they were clouds of thick smoke and gasses. I tried to escape this horrific scene, when I noticed everybody was doing the same thing, only more chaotically. I was stuck. The gases began to engulf the city in pure darkness. People began to light torches to see well. To add to the chaos, it started raining….ROCKS!?!
I…I was truly terrified on what was happening. I quickly shielded myself with a nearby scrap sheet of metal.
It…was so crazy….. Almost….surreal!!
I regained my focus when I realized all the shouting. All around me, I could hear wailing men and screeching children. Everything was going by in a blur. I came too the conclusion that I HAD to get out from here or I’d die. The smell of smoke was suffocating my lungs making it harder to breathe.
I NEED TO GET OUT. ASAP.
Only, it was too late. With every step I took on the trembling ground, and every painful breath I took, it was a step near death. I was ankle deep in smoldering ash, and my vision was blurry. I couldn’t take the pain anymore.
I knew it sounded drastic, but I was just in SO MUCH pain. I decided to end my life right on the spot. It wasn’t worth it to run to salvation; too far away and not enough air. Plus, I had nothing. I was a stupid slave, no education, no family, no friends.
I grabbed the sword of a deceased nearby gladiator, and without hesitation, stuck it into my slowly dying heart.
My body went numb and the ground was quickly making its way to my face. I didn’t have time to feel the impact of the ground as I instantly blacked out from my wound.
