Chapter Seven
That's Life
Run.
Faster.
Run. Faster.
It was all I allowed myself to focus on. When they'd gone, I'd realised that it was probably going to be my only opportunity. And we could sing as much fucking Journey as we liked, but I still didn't know what they wanted with me. So I climbed into the back of the van and tested the back doors. Not even fucking locked.
Amateurs.
The reason I was so focussed on running, though, was because I knew they weren't amateurs.
I really didn't know if I'd live through this.
It was when he reminded me that his threats were still real, that everything seemed to click in my brain.
"Ow," I mutter as I catch my hand on a thorny branch.
I'd figured the woods were the most covered route, so the safest. Long term anyway. I hadn't really thought about the fact I was wearing Jayden's hoodie, and no shoes. I knew my feet were torn to hell, but I refused to concentrate on it, just moving forward. But why, oh why was I always fucking barefoot when I decided to escape?
Run.
Faster.
Run. Faster.
I burst out from the trees in front of an old house. I could see some chickens around, and sheep in the next field. A farm? I didn't care, I needed to hide.
"You okay, dear?"
I see an old woman leaning against her jeep, shotgun folded over her arm.
"Please, I'm being chased by two men," I gasp, and run to her. She frowns, pulling me into a small outbuilding, and closing the door.
"Stay here," she tells me, "I'll come back to bandage your foot, and get you come clothes,"
She heads back outside, and locks the door behind her. My mind is going crazy, and I watch through the cracks in the wooden slats as she she heads towards the house.
Not two seconds later, and Jayden and Rex both run out of the trees. Oh fuck, they were so close behind me. Did they see me? Please lord, give me a break!
"Excuse me, ma'am!"
Jayden's stressed voice makes me shiver, and I hold my breath. Please lady, don't tell them.
"How can I help?"
"Did you see a girl run through here?" He asks, running a hand through his hair. Rex looks stressed too, and they're both looking around like I might magically appear.
"No son, sorry. I've been out here since this morning, and I've been talking to my chickens all day. Would love some company though, if you want to stay for some tea?"
They both looked award as hell, and I stifled a giggle.
"Thank you for the offer, ma'am, we would love to, but we've lost our friend and we need to find her," Rex finally manages.
"If I find her, I'll driver her into town and get her a room at the hotel, you can meet there,"
"Thank you!"
They both speed off, and she remains standing outside for another five minutes, before coming and opening the door.
"Come on, in the house,"
