I returned to my room with heavy steps, opening and shutting the door almost mechanically. Nikki and Izzy sat on the bed, the latter was allowing the former to plait her hair up in one of her infamous styles. With a heavy heart, I told them the news, watching as their eyes widened and mouths opened but no sounds came out. "He's going to blame us for the Prince's murder, and if the Catastrophe interrupts, he'll be blamed as well."
"Well, what are you going to do?" Izzy's worried voice quaked in fear, if it was me only that had to go through this, I wouldn't have minded, but these were my siblings, I was responsible for them. And I knew my father wouldn't have forgiven me if anything had happened to them.
"I tried telling his royal Asshole, but he didn't want to hear me," I ground through my teeth, remembering how I had ran all over the palace looking for the Prince only to find him in the Library avoiding everyone and laughing at my insistence that his advisor was going to try and poison everyone. "C'mon Kit, that's quite far-fetched even for you. Why aren't you getting dressed for the party?" He asked. I reiterated how we were going to be put to death regardless of my attendance if he kept up with his nonchalant attitude. He gripped my shoulder and said how it wouldn't be fun without me especially without me there to weed out the gold diggers, I had laughed hollowly before swatting his hand away and turning on my heel, "As if you'd even get the chance to meet your princess tonight."
"What we can do" Nikki suddenly rose from the bed, pulling her hair free from its constraints before she dove into the closet. Our rooms for some reason were connected by the walk-in closet, so Isabella and I waited a moment for her to return and finish the sentence. With flourish, she emerged with a brilliant blue gown that shone the light, blending into a deep sea blue near the skirt and a matching half-face mask. "Is go to the party, and stop it from happening. I can extract any foreign compound from the liquid and if he poured it all over the cake, we'll just destroy it."
I sighed, knowing it would come to this. Though I paused, "Where did you get this dress from?"
At this question, the normally smart alec girl instantly shut her mouth. "-Umm, pssh, totally not our kingdom or anything because dad didn't send them because he's coming to the ball tonight." She was caught.
I ran a head through my brown hair exasperatedly, "So not only do I have to deal with a poisoned cake, a crooked advisor, dirty guards, a bastard Prince and hundreds of people, but dad too?" I checked the clock, it was 8 now, the party would be underway now. We didn't have any time to waste, especially if they were going to cut the cake at midnight like I assumed.
I suddenly felt a small soft hand interlace with my own calloused one, I looked down to see Izzy grasping onto me tightly, "Not only you, we'll deal with it too. We're in this together, Kit."
The girl was too sweet, I couldn't help smiling at her, "Yes, yes we are." Turning to Nikki, I nodded in assent, "Get us ready, girlie, we have a party to crash."
And with that, I signed over my freedom, just to save this ignorant Prince.
