Ah, the basic title thrown around.
Gay is an umbrella term, it can be used to simply refer to anybody who does not identify as Straight.
Now, onto the meaning.
Gay, or Homosexual, means attraction to the same gender. It is that simple. It can be used to refer to anybody that is attracted to the same gender that they identify with.
Fun fact: I identify as a gay man.
