Papyrus was thrilled during the whole walk - or kind of a run for Sans, considering their difference in height - to the castle. Or, more than to the royal residence, until they reached where had stood the Barrier.
The first time the tall skeleton's eyes met the Sun, he didn't believe it. His breath itched in his "throat," and he was welling up. Eventually, he took a step out of the cave. He turned to his older brother as liquid magic cascaded down his delighted face. "SANS... LOOK, MY FIRST STEP AT THE SURFACE ! ISN'T IT MARVELOUS ? IS THIS GIANT YELLOWISH BALL WHAT YOU CALLED THE MOON ? NO WAIT IT'S THE SUN RIGHT ? IT FEELS SO WARM ! AND ALL AROUND IT IS THE SKY ? HOW DO THOSE WHITE THINGS FLOAT IN THIS BLUE SKY ? *GASP* ARE THEY MAGIC, SANS ?!" The small skeleton chuckled and looked at Paps with some sort of glint in his eye-sockets that the other couldn't quite describe. All around them, thousands of monsters gathered to see the 'Upperworld,' as some of the youthful ones called it.

Sans started explaining to those willing to listen what they were seeing. His knowledge was simplified of course, so Papyrus and the bunch of attentive kids could understand, but soon he was overwhelmed by questions. Eventually, the king appeared. And following suite, the ex-queen, Whimsums hiding behind her and Froggits hopping and croaking arranged in a trail by her side. She didn't even cast a glance to Asgore and rejoined the masses that surrounded Sans. "Hello, young ones. How are you all doing today ?" A few children answered with a smile, which she returned. "Are you curious about the Surface and asking this young man ?" She approached the skeleton gently, before leaning towards him, as she was way taller than him - and he was sitting on the ground anyway. "May I know your name, sir ?"

"heh, names sans, even if i think we already know each other." His usual grin plastered on his face, he winked - for comedic purpose only, don't get anything wrong.

Her eyes widened in realization. "That voice... Are you..." Her voice tailed off a little, before a smirk - oh, that was not very 'queen-y' of her - took place on her features. "I think I have talked to you... A skele-ton."

They both burst in laughter as Papyrus could be heard screaming in the background. She turned to him, her purple dress gracefully following the movement of her body. "I assume you are Papyrus, Sans' brother, am I right ?" Paps first was confused - Sans had to contain his laugh when he saw his bro's astonished face - as to why this female-version-of-the-king-who-seemed-to-like-puns addressed him and why did she talk always so formally. "YOU'RE ACTUALLY QUITE RIGHT HERE, MISS ! I'M SORRY, BUT AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW YOU ?" He was sincerely (me ! DEH, anyone?) lost ; when Sans clarified to him who she was - or, at least, who she used to be -, his face reddened (it was more of a orange-ish tone actually) and he immediately deeply apologized for his "CASUAL BEHAVIOR IN FRONT OF A ROYALTY." She dismissed it, her mother-like smile never vanishing, saying she quit that occupation long, long ago. In the corner of his eye-sockets, Sans saw Asgore make some funny teary face as he was reminded of their past.

The skeleton usually would've gone comforting the big guy by saying some of his (in)famous puns, but the bitter feeling against him concerning Frisk and their sacrifice was still here, despite his attempt in shoving it aside. During the whole time between him leaving his room and right now, he tried and persisted trying killing those inside voices and calming this thoughts. But he couldn't help it, the pain in his chest still hurting like hell. He still hadn't manage to gather some courage nor determination to check his HP.

Enough, he sighed, ruminating  about this won't do any good. I should just... forget. A picture with the words "don't forget" flashed in his mind ; he had no idea why, nor what was this strange yet familiar image appeared to him so suddenly and briefly. Before he could even question this further, the voice of the King rang in his "ears."

"Monsters, I solemnly pronounce us all finally free." A loud cheer escaped everyone's mouth. "However," Sans looked around before resting his gaze on Asgore's serious look. "remember that humans were the ones sealing us in the first place, even if time has flown by and things have changed. Therefore, I'll go ahead with some of the other Boss Monsters in order to set things with the humans, so each and everyone of us can live in peace altogether."

They started to gather around the King : Undyne, Papyrus, Sans and finally Toriel, despite her obvious reluctance. She would be the main mediator, as she still was a former queen and had that special way with words.

And so began their travel to the city.
