Bakugo's heart thudded in his ears and he clenched the remote. "Back the fuck up," he ordered tightly.
Kirishima took a step back but it wasn't nearly enough space to calm Bakugo down, which pissed him off even more. He glared at Kirishima, who just shrugged. "I think it's a valid question. Do you think we're True Mates?"
"No," Bakugo answered flatly. A small, confused part of him immediately wished he could retract his answer.
Kirishima frowned, looking away, then after a long moment he said slowly, "I guess it doesn't matter at the end of the day. We're still mates, either way."
"For now," Bakugo retorted.
Sharp eyes looked at him quickly. "What do you mean?"
"If it wasn't for my stupid heat we wouldn't be in this situation, right?"
"Ummm... I guess." Kirishima crossed his arms across his chest.
"So, as soon as we find the omega villain that did this to me, we can get her to reverse this. You will snap out of these protective mate urges. You'll lose interest in me and then we can go back to normal again. We can both pretend like this never happened." The words that left him all felt wrong, but he pursed his lips and stood his ground.
Kirishima just stared at him. "Is that really what you think?"
Bakugo tilted his chin up stubbornly. "Yes." For a moment Bakugo thought he saw pain flicker across Kirishima's eyes before he took the remote from Bakugo and turned off the TV. "Where's your cell?" Bakugo asked.
He shrugged and turned to start picking up some of the garbage scattered all over his kitchen table. "I don't know, somewhere around here." Something in his voice sounded wrong.
Bakugo tightened his fists, struggling to control the instinctive urge to hug Kirishima, to comfort his mate. Then the musical chime of a phone filled the condo and Kirishima sighed. Bakugo hunted the sound down until he found the phone wedged between the couch cushions, of all places.
He answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Kirishima? Thank goodness, we've been trying to get ahold of you for days!" Bakugo recognized the voice of the president of the Hero Public Safety Commission.
"This is Bakugo."
She gasped. "Even better! Where are you?"
"I'm with Kirishima at his city condo." Kirishima scowled at him as if Bakugo had spilled some kind of important secret.
"Good. Stay there. We've been very busy lately, but we're going to be holding a press conference today, in about an hour, to explain everything that's happened to the public. You don't have to come, it might be better, in fact, if you and Kirishima stay out of the spotlight for a while and let the dust settle from this."
"But our jobs... the villains," he protested.
"Don't worry, we've got all hands on deck. If villains think that we're weak right now, they've got another thing coming!" She almost sounded like she looked forward to the challenge.
"What about the omega villain that did this to me?"
"We have our ears to the ground and eyes on streets. We'll catch her eventually. I can't believe such a quirk even exists. It's fascinating!" She sounded a little too excited now.
"I see. So, you want us to basically hide and do nothing?" He was not happy about that at all.
"I know, I know. Just for a little while. Let's see if the press conference makes any difference. I saw what happened when you guys tried to go to your house. People are too fascinated with you two right now. It's causing too much chaos."
