My breath was hot and sticky. Sweat ran down my face. I could feel pain spring up from my feet. I looked down and saw lava underneath my feet. The glowing orange of the lava made my feet look like Fireweed. I started to sink down and then suddenly, everything was dark. I couldn't smell burning flesh anymore so that was a good thing. I could feel blankets wrapped around me like a cocoon. I was warm but not hot. I tried pushing through the blankets and worked my fingers up through open spaces till they reached open air. I started to pry the blankets away and started to crawl out. I got the last blanket off and jumped out. My legs feel way springier than before. I look down and see dragon like legs where my human legs used to be. I've heard of this happening, but it's rare. So I'm terrified. I almost faint. The room starts to lighten up. I can see a mirror across the room and walk over. In my reflection I see my eyes, their different, more lizard like. Great. At least I can see in the dark now. I decide to head back into the blankets to continue sleeping till morning. I manage to make a smaller cocoon and curl up into a ball. I close my eyes and instantly fall asleep. This time I don't have a lava dream, it's actually quite peaceful this time. I sleep for a few hours before my eyes open to the first rays of sun. I yet again open the blanket cocoon and step out. I hear a knocking at my door. "You up honey." My mom asks. "Yeah, I'll be up in a minute. Just let me get ready." "Okay come down soon." "I will." Now to hide my legs. I search through my closet and find a big cloak to cover my body and my legs. My eyes might be harder. I find my contact lenses and put them in. I don't need them anymore with my new eyes but it should hide them. I look in the mirror and see my eyes look less dragon like. Better. Now my feet. I pull a pair of shoes out of my closet. I slowly slip them on. They kinda fit. I open my door and see gallons everywhere. Who's birthday is it? I have no clue. I walk into the kitchen and feel my little sister Kaya hugging me. "Happy birthday Platinum." Oh it's my birthday, okay. "Yep it is." I say to Kaya. I pick her up and swing her in a circle. "Wheee." She shouts. "Oh good your up." My mom says. "Yeah." "I made your favourite, raspberry pancakes with a scoop of Neapolitan ice-cream." "Yay!" "I know honey." "Thanks mom." So I guess I'm a teenager now. 13. My mom packs my lunch for school and scoots us out the door. "Have a great day Platinum." "I will mom. Bye." The bus comes and I step up. I instantly get bombarded with kids asking for me to sit with them. I say no to all of them and find an empty seat. Everyone try's to sit down next to me but I just shove them away with my new found strength. The bus ride is long and treacherous, everyone trying to talk to me. Seriously can't you see my headphones in my ears. Eventually we come to the last house. A tall, muscular kid walks down the aisle until he stops at my seat. "Out." He barks. "No." I say. "What was that." "No." He starts to shove me out but I hold my ground kicking him backwards. Luckily no one saw my legs. As I sit back down I can see the frightened look in his eyes. He simply looks away and walks to another seat. Of course everyone starts to murmur about what just happened. I don't know why, I was just defending myself. We finally got to school and loaded off the bus. I could here someone calling my name frantically, "Platinum, Platinum over here." I looked over and saw a girl my age standing by a tree. I walked over to her and said, "hi...." I face palm my self because I couldn't remember her name. "It's Silver you dummy." "Oh yeah right, right Silver. I just blanked out." "It's fine Platinum, wanna climb." She says while pointing to a tall tree. "Sure I guess." I respond. "Race ya." She takes towards the tree and chase after I easily pass her and touch the tree. "Wait what!," She screech's, "you've never beaten me. How." "Training." I simply say. She starts climbing up the tree with me close behind. "Quick into the leaves." "Why." "Miss Woodburows coming." I quickly climb up into the leaves to hide myself. "I know you two are up there." Miss Woodburow says. "Come on down." Silver gulps in fear. "You're not in trouble, there's just something important happening." I jump, yes jump down out of the tree. "Feisty aren't you Platinum." "Yes." She brings us over to a stage on the tarmac. Someone up there says through a microphone, "will all grade 8's please come to the stage." I see a bunch of kids walk over to stand beside us. "Good, good. As you all know, today is the day of choosing." Everyone around me sighs but Silver is jumping up and down with joy. "Today is when you get sorted between magical and non-magical. This process is simple, each of you will be called up one by one to touch the special stone. The stone will glow if you are magical, and if you're not, it doesn't glow. Let's start." They start calling names the first five kids aren't magical the sixth however, is. Eventually we get through 15 more kids. "Silver Oaks please come forward." Silver stepped up to the podium and touched the stone. It glowed brightly. Silver came back down to stand beside me. "You're next." She whispers into my ear. I gulp, oh no. "Platinum Pines please come forwards." I step up towards the rock. I know I'll be magical. I touch the stone and get a bright glow. Fifteen more kids pass through before we are finished. "This isn't what we expected but now we are finished. Only 12 youth will come to Serpent academy. Will the twelve magical please come up onto the stage." All twelve of us stepped up onto the stage. "You will now go home to pack some stuff up." We all start to walk towards the exit of the school. Before we can leave dragons come down from the sky and one of them blocks our path. The rider on top of it says "hold up, you won't be walking today." A kid says "how else would we get home." "Riding." "The dragons." "Ya what else." "Wait seriously." "Yes. Now hop on." I look around and see a beautiful aquamarine, coral, and sea coloured dragon. I walk towards it and ask the rider, "can I come on?" "Sure. I'm Leanna." "Nice to meet you. I'm Platinum." I hop up onto the extra saddle behind Leanna. It's actually quite comfy. "My dragon is named Aqua." "Good to know." Aqua starts to flap her large wings to bring us up into the sky. "You good?" Leanna asks. "Yeah I'm good. This beautiful." "I know right." "So how do you become a dragon rider." "Well there's another choosing in a few days to determine your powers and whether you're a rider or not." "Okay." "So how'd you end up with Aqua." "She choose me." "How." "I don't know how it works, but she choose me in her egg." "That's cool." "I know right." "Yeah." I could see my house from the sky. I pointed to it and Leanna flew closer. She dropped a rope ladder thing down onto the roof. "Just climb down, grab your stuff, and come back up." "Okay." I climbed down the ladder and jumped onto my roof. I found my open window and swung inside. My mom was already there. "Here honey, I packed you some snacks." "Thanks mom." I went around my room grabbing necessities while my mom went down and grabbed a bag. I grabbed my toiletries, a blanket and pillow, my phone, my favourite books, some clothes, and most importantly, a picture of my family. I put everything in the duffel bag my mom gave me. "Bye mom, I'll miss you." "I'll miss you too." I climbed out the window with my duffel bag on my shoulders and onto the roof. I climbed up the ladder and back onto the saddle. "You ready?" Leanna asked. "Yep." Leanna pulled up the ladder and clipped it on. Aqua flapped her large wings and took off with a great burst of air. We flew over houses and eventually the forest. "We're almost at Serpent academy so prepare for landing." "Okay." To be honest jumping out of the tree probably prepared me for this. Aqua started to head downwards towards an open field with tons of wooden platforms. I saw that we were heading towards a smaller row of platforms. Suddenly we stopped right before the small row. "We're heading down." Leanna called. "Okay." Aqua started to use smaller flaps to drop down. Aquas talons landed down on a blue platform with a thud. Leanna hopped down off of her saddle and gestured for me to come. "Now be really careful with her scales. She's really sensitive." "Okay then." I stood up onto the saddle and hopped down from a 6 metre drop. "Woah," Leanna squealed as she backed up, "impressive." "Yeah whatever." "Want to help with the saddle." "Sure why not." We started to unbuckle all of Aquas saddle straps. It started to slide down of her scales. "Watch out." Leanna shouted. I backed up so the saddle wouldn't land on my head. "Okay let's bring it in." I said. "You won't." "What do you mean." The saddle started to float towards a shed on the side of the platform. "Woah, cool!" After the saddle was finished Leanna started to walk towards a big building. "Come on!" She shouted. I followed. Eventually we ended up at a big stage where everyone else was. "Welcome all of our new students to Serpent academy. This will be your new home for at least the next 10 years. Your dorm rooms will be posted in Scale hall. Whoever you came with will give you a map of the academy. Now go head off to dinner." Said a man who probably was the principal. "Here you go." Said Leanna as she handed me my map. "Wait what about our stuff?" "It's in your rooms already, now come on." "Okay. I'm starving."
