A chance to start over

After about two years of working in the fields to harvest crops. Deiter and Asuka finally found out about recruitment for the military. That night, Deiter sat in the moonlight, thinking about what he was going to do. He looked at his sleeping sister and sighed 'Shes way too young to join the trainee corps...' He layed down, staring at the sky. He remembered his family, and everything they did together. Then he stopped. 'I cant keep dwelling on the past. Im going to lose alot of people I love. Its just the way the world works.' He wiped the tears from his eyes and stood, looking around. He spotted Asuka sitting by a fire and walked over, sitting next to her. She slowly looked up at him. "Whats up, Deiter?" He sighed and looked her in the eyes. "What're you gonna do about the military recruitment?" "I dont know...Im probably gonna join with my brother..What about you?" Deiter glanced at his sister, then back at Asuka. "I dont know...I want to..But what about my sister? Shes way too young..." Asuka nodded. "Maybe my brother can watch her, after all, he isnt sure about joining." Deiter sighed and scratched his head. "Maybe the instructor can watch her!" Asuka thought about it, then nodded "Good idea. So, you gonna join?" He nodded. "Guess so." After a week, they were transported to the training camp, and Deiter walked to the instructors office. "Instructor Shardis?" He asked, knocking on the door. Keith Shardis answered the door, looking down at him. "Cadet Hayes? What is it?" Deiter gulped and stood as straight as possible. "Sir, my parents are dead and I cant watch my sister. Will you please watch her during training hours?" Keith nodded understandingly and said "Yes, I will, and i am sorry for your loss" Deiter nodded and kissed his 9 year old sisters head "Be good, and stay safe, got it?" His sister nodded and put her thumbs up. "Got it bro!" She said with. A cute, cheesy grin. Deiter nodded at Shardis, ruffled his sisters hair and walked out, smiling. 'Todays a new day...' He looked towards the mess hall, where it seemed everyone was going and walked there, his shoes sinking into the dirt. He opened the door slightly and looked inside, hearing the sounds of a dozen people chattering, along with the smell of sweat and breath. Deiter took a step inside and was immediately noticed by Asuka and her brother. "Deiter!! Over here!~" She yelled, waving to him. He knew her voice and looked over, walking to her and smiling. "How do you like it so far? Everything you hoped?" Asuka scratched her autumn colored hair, chuckling. "Not really...Beds are uncomfortable, people are kinda rude and mean. And well....The food sucks." Deiter nodded and laughed. "I could say the same on my end." Asuka tilted her head slightly "But, aren't guys supposed to be rough with each other? I mean, isn't it like a tradition to beat each other up?" Deiter shrugged "You could say that. Yo, Nagatsu, How ya holdin' up?"  Nagatsu, Asuka's brother, looked up from his food and smiled "About as good as a guy eating this crap food can be." Deiter laughed and nodded. "It may be bad now, but just imagine, getting to fight for a cause, getting to zoom around with Omni-Directional manuever gear! It's every kids dream!" Asuka nodded and looked down. "But...Deiter...And Nagatsu...Promise me something?" Nagatsu and Deiter spoke in unison. "Yeah?" Asuka looked up at them and moved her hair out of her face. "If I die, will you guys promise to keep the fight for humanity going without me?" Deiter nodded hesitantly. "Of course, but-...No titan is gonna get to you,it would have to go through me!" Nagatsu nodded eagerly and said "Me too!" Asuka nodded and smiled. "Thank you both..So much for always being there." "No prob, sis!" Nagatsu said, patting her head. "Well of course, it's what I do! I protect the ones I love and care about!" She hugged them both and pulled them close. "I seriously love you guys." They responded in unison "Love ya too!" After about 3 more minutes, the instructor dismissed them to doing laps around the field. Deiter was having a bit of trouble as he got to the end of his 35th lap. He looked over at Asuka, who seemed to be having as much trouble as him. "Yo, Asuka? You doing alright?" Asuka nodded, wiping the sweat from her forehead and panting slightly. "Yeah! I'm fine!" She kept pace with Deiter, until about the 42nd lap. Then she started to fall behind, clearly exhausted. Deiter slowed down to jog next to her and offered to give her a piggy back ride. She politely obliged, But Deiter didn't stop. After asking 2 more times, he picked her up and put her onto his back, struggling, but running. At their 50th lap, The instructor sent them to dinner. Then stood at the front of the mess hall. "Tomorrow will be your first true training! You will introduce yourselves to me, and your fellow squadmates! And learn the basic information of being in the military!! And you will be put on the Omni-Directional Maneuver gear simulation devices to test if you can even begin training! Is that clear?!" Everyone stood and shouted in unison. "Yes sir!!"
