Mommy don’t love me, and Daddy don’t care

I guess they were right, life just isn’t fair,

Why don’t you just die is what they said,

As rolled down his cheeks was something wet and bright red,

We were like a stick of dynamite, both sides were lit,

Hoping one day we’d be part of the graduating class of “we made it”,

We were called many things; many names were spit at us,

Being called stupid and worthless by a world built upon status,

See a boy, whose personality was built upon pills and prescriptions,

A young beauty that’s bombarded by an ugly description,

See, we didn’t know who we were, so others decided for us,

We were a song with a beat but an unspoken chorus,

Told day after day that no man would love her,

That his dad never loved him as his mother gives him the cold shoulder,

The mother whose husband left her, a baby just born,

Maybe if she was a little prettier, their marriage would not have been torn,

Maybe if he was a better son, his daddy wouldn’t have left,

With a father’s smart discipline, he wouldn’t have turned to theft,

A young boy with a problem, he eats when he’s depressed,

Called fat, ugly, and disturbed, while avoiding all the rest,

See nobody’s perfect, we’re all guilty of falling short,

But why beat a kid up for failing at a sport,

You don’t know what they’ve been through who are you to tell,

A kid to go die, when he’s already been through hell,

Tell a girl she’s not worth it because she doesn’t have the butt,

Tell a teen he’s worth nothing, driving him to cut,

See it seems the list gets updated yearly,

Our thoughts become distorted, we’re not thinking clearly,

Calling kids a variety of names from stupid to weird,

To downright disgusting, to disturbed, and to feared,

We had to learn how to be still as a statue,

To avoid being seen and having fingers pointed right at you,

That little rhyme about sticks and stones and words that will never hurt,

Well it was all a lie because those words left us feeling lower than dirt,

Made us feel like love was a foreign conception,

Tricked by all the harsh words and their shady deception,

Because it took a while but I feel like I see,

Despite my shortcomings there’s so much more I can be,

I can lend that helping hand and reach out to another,

And one day be that husband to a wonderful mother,

Discipline my children and teach them how to behave,

Raise a boy up into manhood, and teach him how to shave,

You may just see it as a helping hand to lend,

But you never know, you may be the first to actually call them friend,

When it seems as though it’s not worth it, and they just have nothing left,

That little act of kindness could be the difference between life and death,

So as you go throughout your day, thinking of what to do,

Think about showing kindness; start thinking,” To who?”,

Because that smile you pass their way, could give you a friend that just may last for ages,

One you can reflect on as you’re flipping through the pages,

Of this great, big book of life that seems too great to measure,

When you choose to make it sunny, when they forecast rainy weather,

Because this life’s too great to waste on petty arguments alone,

Don’t let all their hateful scorns, turn your loving heart to stone,

Your life’s too good to be wasted and much too valuable at that,

Are you gonna throw in the towel just because someone called you fat,

Or are you gonna smile as you look the other way,

Because you know it isn’t true, all those hateful things they say,

Will you choose to think the better and rise above the hate,

We can’t control what happens, I  guess that’s why we call it fate,

But we have a choice in how we shall react,

Instead of feeling pain, we can feel happiness that’s a fact,

So as you go about your day keep it in your mind,

You can choose to believe in yourself, and leave the sorrow and pain behind,

You can choose to reach out, and not be the one to neglect,

Cause’ that simple act of kindness, could have an everlasting effect.
