Prologue: "The Old Building"
Written on 2/17/19-Seven years ago-
They say that curiosity killed the cat.
But thankfully it didn't kill Alex.
Alexandra "Alex" Raine, just a typical curious 7 year old kid who's looking for adventures to entertain herself.
Right now all she was looking for is a way out.
She was stuck in a dark hole. She had no idea how she got in there. All she knew is she was running around, having fun exploring, when all of a sudden she felt herself falling and found herself in a place with no way out.
A few moments earlier, she and her playmates where wondering around some old, crumbling building which used to be a part of their school. Alex was told that part of the school got burned because of some freaky fire accident. There wasn't enough funds for it to be fixed again and overtime they just learned to not bother with the building anymore.
This building was supposed to be forbidden and no one was allowed to be there, but when kids are told to stay away from something, they do the exact opposite.
And then they immediately regret disobeying the adults right after.
That was exactly what Alex felt right now. If she listened to the teachers and staff who told her to stay away from this building, she wouldn't be stuck in some deep dark hole.
She tried shouting for help. But it seemed like she had fallen way too far for anyone to hear her.
As a child scared and alone in an unknown place, Alex could have cried, but she didn't.
Alex knew crying wouldn't get her anywhere. And her curiosity was still better than her fear so she decided to walk around in the darkness to try to find her way out.
Soon her eyes adjusted to the darkness and she could outline shapes of rocks and furniture... but still too dark to see clearly.
And then she glimpsed on what seemed like a corner of a room.
If there was a corner, then there must be walls...
And if there are walls then perhaps if she followed it there might be a door?
Alex approached the wall and pressed her hand against it. She continued walking around, her hand still on the wall as she walked cautiously, letting the wall guide her.
She felt something sharp prick her on her left leg. She yelped from the pain and crouched down to check what it was that hurt her.
Her eyes lit up. There was a rock on the ground, blocking something that seemed to be glowing underneath.
She pushed away the rock. It took quite a bit of her strength to move the rock for it was quite huge.
Underneath was a glowing shard that lit the room with a faint light. Alex was about to pick it up when a string-like wisp of smoke made her halt from her actions.
The smoke glowed the same way as the shard. Alex stared at it with fascination. She had never seen anything like it.
She touched the smoke, letting it brush against her fingers. To her surprise the smoke turned from a string into a sharp rod and pricked the tip of her pointy finger. She gasped and tried to shake it off from her hand, but it stuck to her even more.
She felt tiny needles prick her as the rod made it deeper into her finger. It was painful but there wasn't any blood drawing from her skin. She felt her finger burn
Tears flowed down from her eyes as she felt it burn deeper into her, as if it was making its way into her blood stream.Suddenly, the shard lifted up on its own, as if controlled by some secret mysterious force. The shard hurled itself towards her hand, forcing her to grasp and hold it. The shard glowed into a blue-ish green hue, making Alex recoil from shock.
Alex's finger glew bright and brighter until the light was almost blinding. She shielded her eyes and with a flash the light returned to its weak glow.
Her finger dimmed and she stared at it, wondering if everything she had just witnessed was true and not fantasy. She was breathing heavily, her cheek stained with tears.
Alex tried to calm herself and focused on the shard she was still holding in her hands. She lifted the shard up to try illuminate the room, returning to the task of trying to find her way out.
At last, she saw a door on the opposite side of the room. She hastily made her way towards it and threw the door open. There was a staircase which leads upwards, light coming from above her. She placed the shard in her pocket and climbed up, feeling hope course through her body.
Relief washed over her when she finally saw daylight. She found herself just outside the old building, the entrance to her school just a few steps ahead.
She immediately ran away, not looking back at that cursed place. She will never return to that building ever again...
...or so she thought.
