The two story brick building came into view, snapping her back to the horrors of her reality. A sob escaped her quivering lips as she wiped her tears away fiercely. As the police cruiser come to a stop, she slowly lifted her hand that felt as though it weighed a ton. Grabbing the door handle she pushed it open. As she stepped out of the car, her legs wobbled. She felt as though she had no control over them. Her younger brother followed suit. His bright blue eyes were bloodshot, an obvious sign he had been crying.Looking away, so he would not see the tears that were threatening to fall. The brutal and cold winter wind whipped her curly brown hair onto her face. Making her already numb body feel impossibly more numb. Pushing her hair away, she stared at the police station; not ready to relive the unimaginable nightmare her brother and her had undergone.
¨Hannah?¨ A deep voice asked her.
Turning her head slowly towards the officer, she stared at him. Her once beautiful blue eyes, now a dull grey, revealed the emptiness she felt deep within her. He moved his gaze to the ground. His eyes that reminded her of the vibrant spring moss, ever since they were children-were now hidden from view. He was her best friend growing up, and still is. However, her best friend could not even look at her. Rubbing his dirty blonde buzz cut hair, he cleared his throat. ¨Are you ready?¨
"Yes" She whispered then faced her brother. "Taylor?" She said in a voice she didn't recognize.. Her brothers face snapped towards her, as if she had startled him from a daydream. Slowing realizing what she wanted he started walking towards the police station. Her body moved, but her mind did not register it. She had to force herself not to tremble, as they grew nearer to the doors. Finally reaching the glass doors, she grabbed the handle and tried to push the doors open. They felt too heavy for her already exhausted body.
¨Let me get that.¨ said. Before she could protest he stepped around her and opened the door. She whispered a thank you and stepped into the station. As soon as she walked in she could feel multiple eyes on her. A sense of claustrophobia enveloped her like a blanket and slowly choked her as a snake would with its prey. Looking for her brother, her eyes felt as though the would not focus. Her arms were flailing around reaching for something, anything, and when she could not grasp anything, she suddenly felt herself beginning to panic. The sound of her accelerating heartbeat was pounding in her ears like the beat of a drum. Her chest tightened, causing her to place her tan hands onto her throat. Face flushing, she began taking in breaths desperately. The tightness in her throat stole her breath like a thief in the night. It was as if she forgot how to breathe. Her mouth became dry and all of a sudden she was extremely thirsty.
Grabbing her and bringing her towards a chair, Noah set her down and crouched down to her level. The words "breathe" echoed in her ears. His voice sounded so far away, her mind just could not focus. She felt betrayed by her own body on its own accord. Her lungs felt as though they were filling with water; as if she were slowly drowning. She was gasping for breath. The desire to suck down as much air as possible consumed her. The sensation of someone hugging her and rubbing her back calmed her, only in the slightest. "Where's Taylor?"
"Breathe," Was whispered into her ear repeatedly.
"Where's my brother?!" She yelled, "He'll find us!" Faintly hearing her brother calling her name, she snapped her face towards him. She felt her neck snap a little by how fast she turned her neck. He engulfed her in a hug and she hugged back as tight as possible. Her hug was a promise, to protect from her anyone and anything. Tears began to blurred her vision. "I'm so sorry Taylor." I sobbed, "I did this."
"You didn't do anything wrong Hannah," he said while hugging her tighter. "He did."
