“What the fu-”

“Don’t swear.” he interrupts. Now isn’t that ironical? He’s the one who’s found to be swearing all the time.

“Ironic” I simply say.

“For heavens’ sake, Emily! Please don’t change the topic again.” he pleads. “I assure you, we won’t get into trouble. We’ll do it well planned, and we’ll get the money.”

“Are you crazy? This isn’t like one of those mischiefs we’ve been doing since kindergarten. It’s a crime, you dumbhead!”, I said, irritated. Is he out of his mind or something?

“It’s worth the need.” he sighed.

“What need? The most you would want to do is buy some kind of expensive PlayStation, right?”

"No..."

"Huh, something more sillier?" I asked playfully.

“I-I.. need to go to India.” His voice cracked at the end. That was weird. And I’ve been hearing the name of this country several times lately.

“Why on earth, India?”

“It’s complicated.” I could sense some pain in his voice.

“What’s wrong Dan, are you okay?”

“I need the money.”

“Just tell me, why India.”

“I need the money, Em.”

“Don’t call me that!”, I complain, trying to lighten the mood, but in vain.

“I need the money” he repeats. I’m getting irritated now.

“Just tell the damn thing, Daniel.”

“It’s a long story.”

“I’m listening.”

“I can’t, Emily. Telling it, would make it seem more real, I can’t do that.” he sighed. What risk? What would become real? I seriously needed to figure out. Dan’s always been there for me. And now, he needs me. But I can’t help him with a crime. It’s just not right.

“Personal?”, I ask.

“Kinda yeah.”, he says.

“Okay.” Awkward silence. And then he hangs up. Maybe he got lost into some thoughts, about whatever problem that’s bothering him. It’s really weird to see him like this. He’s always been the jovial type.

Just then, the diary caught my eyes.

3 Jan 2012

Three months to go. I’m supposed to be quick. But I just don’t know what happens to me when I’m around her. Today, I just stood at the side of the path where she passes by, pretending to wait for someone. When the group of girls walked past me, everything seemed to be in slow-motion. I couldn’t gain enough courage to stop them and introduce myself. But I’m glad I could hear the name of my angel. One of her friends called her ‘Miley’. Well, that was all I could hear. And the rest of the day was just as boring. I told my friends about moving to India and they were all shocked. Some offered to let me stay at their house for a year, but well that’s pretty complicated.

Miley, nice name. I couldn’t help but read the next entry as well. His entries are really short!

4 Jan 2012

Surprise! Miley goes to my school!

WHAT!? The girl went to his school and he didn’t notice? Is he blind or something? Boys, I reminded myself.

We were just lofing around the campus when I saw her walking down the corridor. I thought I was just imagining it was her until my friend caught me staring at her. When I asked if she was a newbie, he laughed. He said she’d been here for like a couple of years. I was stunned. How could I not notice? Well, things are easier now. I’ll have an excuse to meet her. I should work this out. Think Scott think!

So his name is Scott, finally revealed! I wonder why he’s being such a chicken. Can’t he just go straight and tell it on her face? After all, girls like guys who dare. At least, that’s how it is in movies.
