There is life and there is death.
We all know it, but put off the thought hoping we might forget it entirely. A flower blooms and dies and is gone with no trace of it ever existing it the first place.
We laugh, we cry, we get angry and scared.
We live and die and the only thing left behind is the memory, and even that is soon forgotten.people always seem to get caught up in the little things; making empty promises, fighting losing battles, being bitter and angry and dwelling in the past.
I swore to myself I'd never be one of those people, and yet, here I am.
I tried, believe me I tried to be indifferent to the world and it's events. I didn't exactly detach myself as much as I decided to not let things get to me. The thing is though, people still didn't get to me, I just got a little caught up in a game I did not care to play."Getting myself into situations like this really, I thought I was better than that," I muttered to myself, zipping up my duffel bag and heading toward the door. I had planned, once I got to the bottom floor, going out the back door discreetly in hopes of not being spotted. Then a knock came at the door.
Only a few inches from it, I could see through the peep hole. There was a short, not unfamiliar man standing there, his eyes looking directly into mine. Of course he couldn't see me, but he seemed to like doing it, perhaps saw it as intimidating. He was a short man though, with a receding hairline, the bushiest eyebrows I'd ever seen, and with his expression he looked like a puny gorilla might if you were to step on its lunch. He was also the landlord.
"ARDEN MOOR." The little man yelled through the door, banging on it hard and fast; well, as hard and fast as he could manage at least.
"Arden, I know you're in there. There were some strange people at my door asking about you." He said suddenly excited, his voice still raised, "They said the person they were looking for is dangerous and they were offering a lot of money for his capture. They didn't give me much to go on except for that he would've arrived about a week ago, they heard he was in the area you see." he wheezed, slapping his hand on his leg. "Who goes looking for someone with only that? I mean I don't let just anyone in here and of course I didn't believe to have anyone like that in my establishment-" he straightened.
*of course you didn't, you're a stupid little-*
"-until I was looking through my files and realized," *is he really going to tell this whole story to a door?* "It was you! You were the only person who came in last week!"He raised his voice louder and a pitch higher, it was almost comical how worked up he was getting. "And you are coming with me and I will get the reward for my finding you."
*like you could if you tried*
I let an exasperated sigh slide out of my mouth. A mistake. "Open the door." He said expectantly in a singsong voice. He would've unlocked it like one would expect, but the poor man was as dumb as he was ugly and had "lost" his own set of keys the day after I'd moved in. I chuckled a bit inside and slowly, I stepped back, one foot at a time till I was out of the living room.I swiftly spun on my heel and was in my room in seconds, which wasn't exactly impressive, seeing as the room was just behind me. It really was a small apartment. I honestly could not see why exactly why the little man was so worked up over this piece of garbage. The wallpaper was peeling and the constant sound of water monotonously dripping in the bucket I'd left in the corner of the room where the ceiling had been eroded through was infuriating. Not to mention the smell..
Once in the bedroom, I ran straight for the window. Quietly, I pushed it up and looked out into the alley below. No one was around, the sounds of the busy midday traffic flooded in through the opening. A police siren drowned out the landlords angry yelling temporarily.
With no fire escape and being on the top floor -probably not the best decision- I needed to climb to the roof. After securing my bag on my back I hoisted myself onto the windowsill and pulled myself out. Grabbing every indent in the building I could find and slowly moving up till I found a ledge and realized I must've reached the roof.
After pulling myself up and onto the ledge, I stood up, the sun nearly blinding me. It was that time of day when even the clouds wouldn't cover it. I walked over to the other side of the roof, not in much of a hurry. The guy couldn't break a door down, let alone fast enough to figure out where I had gone and get here it time to actually get to me. Even if he did all of that, which was highly doubtful, he couldn't beat me in a fight. The next building was shorter than this one and about a twenty foot jump. *I can make it* sighing, I walked a short distance backward and readied myself then ran at full speed toward the edge. A crash came from the room below just as I sprang off the building, leaving it behind. Air whipped at my face and the wind rung through my ears.
All I could feel was air and the sensation of falling. I put my arms out, savoring the moment. As the roof of the building got closer I curled into a sort of summersault landing my feet on the hard brick first then rolling off the impact of the fall.It still hurt, but it was nothing I couldn't handle. I did have to lay on the ground for a minute though.. to catch my breath.
After about thirty seconds I told myself I had rested enough and walked toward the door on the roof that should lead to the staircase in the building. It was locked. I flung my bag off of my shoulder and reached into it, pulling out two thin metal wires and stuck then into the lock. After a second or two the lock clicked. Now that all of that was over I could finally get back on track.I usually saw things like this coming, but the psycho landlord was not on my schedule.
