My name is Cassidy Hill, I am 16. I have normal friends, normal family, I’m a normal student. I have a normal life. I have a normal best friend, Sam Wolfe. My life was normal, at least one month ago. If you told me my life would have changed that much, and in the way it did, I wouldn’t have believed you.

One month ago, the day before my birthday;  Untold secrets

“Hey Cassidy? What do you want for your birthday?” requested Sam.

“Guess.” I said shot back at her.

“Tattoo?” Sam said with a really? Look on her face.

“Well its fading, and I want it to stay. Mom said on my 15th birthday I could.” I replied.

(I have a birthmark on my left hip that looks like a cougar print, but it started to fad when I was 12, so I want it back to its original look.) Sam and I are sitting on a bank by the little creek that runs behind the house, Sam’s toes in the water, well mine are a good foot away. Some people say I’m just looking for attention, or that because of my birthmark I’m faking that I really hate water, but it’s true. I used to love water, but when I was 7 years old the beaver dam up stream gave out. Sam was near the bank and got out in the nick of time, but I was not so lucky, I was in the middle of the creek. I was swept 8 km up stream. It took the rescue team two days to find me, but they didn’t find me. I walked home, they found me walking up my driveway. Anyways, since that day I won’t go in water unless I have to.

“Sam, let’s go back home, we still need to pack for tomorrows camping trip. I want to pack some of my art stuff this time.”

“I have known clue how you are going to do that! You know you are only aloud to pack all your extra things in your little suit case! You tried last year and failed, remember, I sat on it and you tried to zip it up, and we busted the zipper. Your dad was so mad, you had to use a plastic bag!” Sam said with a snicker.

“Ya, well he was only mad to cover up the fact that my present was a new bag! Not only that, but it was full of horse tack!

“I was so mad at him after I saw that! Good thing it wasn’t your dad, you would have tackled him!”

“No, we would have tackled him!” at this we burst out laughing.

As we sit there laughing I think about how Sam must feel when we talk about our parents, her dad was the center of her world until he left them, Sam was 6 years old when it happened, and he left nothing to show that he was ever there, but a framed picture of him and Sam, and a divorce paper. The only things he took that weren’t his was $1000. Sam was so devastated that she went into complete shut down, and that’s when I came into the picture.

“By the way, I was bugging you about you wanting a tattoo. Mines starting to fade too. I thing that I’m going to get a tattoo over it too.” Sam commented.

Now, as if we were meant to be best friends, Sam has a birth mark on her hip as well, but it is a wolf paw print. Our moms fined it funny that our birthmarks reflect our personalities.

“I wanted to get mine done in the brown that it was before it faded.” I said with a sigh.

“We should go back and pack, so that we have time to think if we miss anything.” Sam said as she started to stand up.

“Rrraaaaaggguu” I said as I stretched to get up, “ya I guess.”

”see you tomorrow Cassidy!” Sam yelled as she crossed the creek back to her house.

“See ya” I yelled back, and sprinted into the woods.

It’s about a 2 km back to my house. I push myself to the edge, and sprint hard and fast, spring across rocks and run as fast as my legs can take me. There is this large cliff, about 15m drop. I run even faster than leap. I free fall for about 10 seconds, then land on this huge tree branch. Now I am 11m off the ground. I jump branch to branch landing on my feet, not even losing balance for a second. Just as I’m about to jump to the last branch, I hear my name called. Instead if jumping off and landing on the ground, I jumped up and swung onto the branch above.

“Whoa, it’s just me.”

“You scared the crap out of me.” I wheezed realizing who it was.

“God, you get more cat like every day.” He said.

“I know. It scares me, it’s like I’m a cat stuck inside a humans body.” I commented

“Hey Braidy, are you coming camping this year?”

“No, my grandpa is coming up tomorrow.”

“You always have an excuse.” I pouted.

“I know. You going home? Your mom was asking around for you.”

“But of course, I wasn’t throwing myself of a cliff for nothing.” I said with a smile.

Braidy smiled, but it faded to a worried look, then he glanced at me. I shot him a ‘what?’ look.

"Um, I got to get home, but before I do, this weekend, strange things are going to happen to you Cassidy.” He said, a worried look on his face.

I looked away and said “what am I going to turn into a frog?” I heard the sound of flapping, turned to

look were Braidy was, but he was gone. A hawk called longingly above my head and looked straight at me. I shivered an unsettling feeling washed over me, as if I knew the hawk, as if it knew me.

As I was walking up the driveway, I smelt chicken soup and biscuits cooking in the kitchen. ‘She must have wanted me home if she is cooking this.’ I thought. My mom knew if she wanted me home within the hour she would cook up some chicken soup and biscuits. I walked up the steps and slipped in side. The last thing I saw outside was the hawk circling and heading back down the driveway.

“Thanks mom, can I go pack now, I want to remember everything I might even need.” I said, putting my dish in the sink.

“Yes, just don’t over pack please, art, clothing and a book or two is all you really need. Dad and I will deal with the rest.” Mom said over her book.

“Ok, all bring my whole room again.” I said laughing.

I saw mom grinning and ran upstairs to my room. I plop down on my bed and sigh. As I’m about to sit up on my bed to get to work, an extremely intense ripples down my arm. It is so intense that I black out for a second or two. When I wake up my vision is blurry, when it clears it is different. I look and my hand, and fined that I can see more details than normal. My vision is so clean and crisp. Another shock hits me and I black out again. When I wake up my vision is back to normal, but it feels like I have been hit by a bus or two. I feel a terrible searing pain in my left hip, and when I pull back my clothing I see that my birthmark is black as night. My birthmark goes back to normal but it stays black. I am so scared, what is happening to me? No one must know about this. I started packing everything I might like I said I would. But I put a note book at bottom of the suitcase so that I can record anything else that happens to me. That’s when it hits me. “Braidy” I whisper. He said that weird things will happen this weekend.

“But how did he know?” I thought out loud.

Then I thought about how he vanished, and that hawk. I was thinking about it, then my eyes got big.

“No, it can’t be. People like that are just stories. He can’t be. But how else? And that hawk. How else would it have known to go down the driveway then turn left and go straight? That’s the easiest way to get to his house. Now I’m over thinking this. It was a mindless bird. All talk to him after the camping trip.”

That night I stay up thinking all about what Braidy said, wondering what will happen, and why. When I finally get to sleep, I dream of a cave, I wolf beside me and a hawk in a tree by to creeks. It’s so peaceful, I want to stay here forever. I look down at myself, I’m a cougar. Another cougar walks in, and lays behind me, he licks my ear, and I snuggle down. The last thing I see before I fall asleep is a big black wolf walking in and the other wolf walking up to him as rubbing against him. We are a family.
