I sat idly in front of my den, watching as my clan as they did their daily chores. A sense of pride swelled in my chest as I watched, a purr in my throat. I had already done my hunting patrol today, and was waiting for the border patrol to get back so they could get ready for the gathering tonight. It was a full moon tonight and the whole clan was jittery. Tensions between clans had formed because winter was coming soon, which meant arguments could bubble up at the snap of a twig. Some mouse brains just could keep their mouths shut.
My deputy Gingernose came running towards me after his patrol, ready to report. He was always so hyper, but that was the reason he made such a good deputy. This clan needs someone as positive as him when the time comes. I looked at him and meowed calmly,"Is everyone ready for the gathering?" He nodded excitedly.
The full moon was rising up, with our ancestors shining in the sky. I couldn't help but think of all the lost warriors up there. The warriors who gave me my nine lives. I led my clan towards the smaller island where our gatherings are held. Elders tell tales of a land a long time ago before the island, where we had the gatherings at Four trees. The scent of Thunderclan was strong as we swam towards the island. With leafbare coming on, it was getting harder to swim in the cold water.
I led my clan into the island and looked around at the Thunderclan cats. I decided that I should mingle while I could. I missed being able to mingle in these gatherings as a warrior; there were so many interesting cats here to get to know. As I greeted Thunderclan's leader, Blazingfur, a pair of green eyes caught mine. They were hidden in the shadows. My fur bristled at the though of an intruder, and I began to trot towards the pair of eyes carefully. The cat walked out of the shadows, and a waft of Thunderclan scent flooded into my nose. She was a clan cat. I wondered why I had never seen her before. Probably because she hides.
The she-cat slowly approached me, her tail flicking from side to side. She truly was beautiful, her fur soft and slightly tangled from the brambles in her territory. She ducked her head respectively towards me, in which I did the same.
"Quietstar, I don't believe we've ever met." Her voice was quiet like the shadow she is, matching with mine. It had a sort of ting to it that interested me. I nodded and meowed,"No I don't think so. What is your name?" Her ear twitched and no emotion was showed through her stern gaze. A tingling feeling appeared in my stomach at her gaze. It was as if she saw straight through my authority."I'm Hollyleaf." She bowed her head once more. I mrrowed in delight at this, moving forward to touch noses with her in greeting. She hesitated at first but did the same. This she-cat interested me a bit too much, but I didn't care. It was okay to mingle at a gathering. As Shadowclan cats and Windclan filed in, I waved my tail to Hollyleaf and leapt up onto the tree branch to start the meeting. I looked around but couldn't see Hollyleaf anywhere after that. What an interesting cat.
At the next half moon, I decided that I would take a stroll out on the territory. Sneaking out quickly so that I could be alone, and ran down to the river. I wanted to try and catch some fish, maybe just lay down on the sand bank and relax. Being a leader was stressful at times. Laying down on the sand, I laid on my back and stared at the stars.
It was quite relaxing until a face appeared in front of mine. I nearly jumped out of my fur, jumping away and bushing up my tail. That was until I saw the curious eyes that stared at me in the night. Her fur almost blended in with the darkness, but her eyes showed like leaves in greenleaf. My fur was still bushed out, but for some reason those eyes made it hard to be scared. They were hypnotic.
"Hollyleaf? What are you doing here? This is Riverclan territory!" I growled. How dare she? "I don't belong to a clan Quietstar. I was just passing through towards the island, that's where I tend to stay." I was shocked to hear this. I thought for sure she was a clan cat. I had begun to relax, but I was still annoyed. She had begun to walk towards me, but I wasn't scared. We had become acquaintances.
She nuzzled me lightly. It seemed she was tired, because she was nearly falling asleep leaning against me. I curled up with her, finding it easy. Everything in me screamed to be more cautious, but I just couldn't find a way to. The last time I had ever been like this with someone.. I shook the thoughts of Doefur away, focusing on Hollyleaf's soft fur against mine. She turned to look at me with tired eyes. "It's been so long since I've felt the comfort of another cat's warmth." She meowed, a sad tone in her voice. I felt a pang in my heart.
"Why is that?" I asked, licking her ears comfortingly. She shook her head, but leaned into my touch. "I just couldn't deal with it anymore. I used to belong to Thunderclan, but I guess I never belonged w i t h Thunderclan. But no matter what, I just can't make myself leave." This shocked me, but I nodded anyways. She needed comfort. I didn't say anything, but just continued to groom her fur as her breathing slowed. Soon my own slowed, and I fell asleep with the she-cat who didn't belong anywhere.
