Chapter 13 Spelling Bee

Genesis POV

"Thank you Jamie" I said heading out a little early to give myself time to change before going to Alexis's spelling bee. She seemed really excited about it so I wanna be there for her.

I drove to my apartment and changed into a pair of jeans and a pink tank. I put my hair into a neat bun and grabbed my purse. I went downstairs and grabbed a small bag of pretzels and headed out the door. Xavier texted me the address of the elementary school last night. I put it into my gps. In 15 minutes I was pulling into the school. Once I found a good place to park I decided to text Xavier.

Me: Are You Here Yet?

Xavier: Running late but I'll be there I promise

I got out of the car and walked to the front entrance of the school. I walked inside and looked at the posters on the wall. The posters said the spelling bee will be held in the auditorium which was right around the corner. There were about 60 people here. I found a seat in the middle and put my purse down beside me. Saving a seat for Xavier. It hadn't started yet so I pulled out my phone and scrolled through instagram.

In five minutes the spelling bee started. A brownskin short haired woman got on stage. She said she was happy that so many parents showed up. She said the spelling bees main goal is to show the parents how much their child's vocabulary has improved. She continued talking and I spotted Alexis and she waved at me. I waved back and gave her a thumbs up.

The spelling bee started and about 6 kids went before it was Alexis's turn. She walked up to the front of the stage confident with a big smile on her face.

"Hi Alexis " the short haired woman said.

"Hi Mrs.Bell" she said.

"Alexis your word is—" she was interrupted as gunshots rang out.

Xavier POV

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the contact. It was genesis. She was asking if I were at Alexis's school yet. I texted her back as Ant walked into my office.

"Did you find her yet?" I asked putting my phone back into my pocket.

"He had a daughter but after 2009 she just vanished can't find anything after that" he said.

"Probably changed her name" I said.

"Same thing I was thinking we'll find her she's out there" he said and I nodded. There was a knock on my door and Anthony stepped out to answer it. He came back  2 minutes later.

"Donte wanna talk to you" he said and I shook my head and got up.

"I got somewhere I need to be" I said. I grabbed my keys and me and Anthony walked out. I locked my office up and headed to the front door.

"Wassup x can I talk to you about some real quick" donte said stopping me.

"You got 2 minutes" I said.

"I'm ready to get out there" he said. I looked at him up and down.

"You what ? 15?" I asked. He nodded.

"Our lights are off . No food . I need to do this for my family man I'm ready, I'm tired of seeing my mom struggling" he said.

"This is a dangerous game donte , are you ready to have somebody else's blood on your hands?" I asked. He looked at me like he was unsure.

"I'm ready to do whatever I gotta do to get that bread" he said . I looked at him for a second and nodded before walking off. I got into my car and headed to the school. It was so much traffic , I didn't know what the hell was going on. I parked as close as possible and decided to walk the rest of the way.
