For what ever reason my mother thinks it is a good idea to throw a large party for my twenty-fifth birthday, the same day I would take on the mantle of Alpha. With or without my mate. And it looks like it will be with out my mate for the time being anyways. I have to have hope that she is still out there somewhere.
"Hey bro time to go have lunch."
"Is that code for we are getting kicked out of own house?" I ask my younger brother and best friend, Cornelius, Cort.
"Man she does this every year throws a surprise birthday party, kicks us out like we don't know what's going on."
"Just let her have it its not going to last much longer when your mate comes around." My soon to be beta, Carter, spouts, "or she could come along and make it ten times wors. . . I mean better."
I hear a feminine laughter as delicate footfalls come closer to the lounge room.
"Great cover honey but you can sleep on the couch for the next two nights if you think that I will only make things worse."
"Never you dear I just meant Addison's mate because you know he deserves to be miserable." He coos at his angry mate. Maisie she stands a little bit above five foot, and compared to the males of our species much like all of the females she is small delicate and possesses a fiery temper to boot.
Our mates are meant to stand up to us but are also meant to be protected by all.
At almost twenty-five, I am one of the older ones that have still yet not met their mate. I can still feel that she is out there so hope is not lost. I am just getting impatient but who would not at my age you know.
"You coming Maisie?" I ask as I pick up a set of keys.
"Naw y'all go ahead I'm gonna help out where I can. Your momma is actually supposed to be back really soon with the important piece so you need to leave . . . . now."
"Kay whatever bossy," I yell as Cort Carter and myself head out the side door and to the garage.
"Yeah bye Felicia," she shouts back and I just wave her off while her own mate can barely control himself
We end up on Main Street of our little town; goof off like teenagers for the next couple of hours. Coffee shop, walking around stores and not buying a damn thing, then there is the arcade, biding our time until we are summoned back to my own home.
My loving mother is or has something big in the works but her motivation seems to be all over the place, birthday party today but balls held in my honour over the last three months. Then there is the decorating, my house that is, over the last two weeks every time I came home I saw something new or not there anymore.
While minimal, functional, and barely used, my decorating style is pleasantly arranged now the house seems more homey, comfort and warmth oozing out from every corner of the home.
My brother and beta pull me out of my thoughts with their loud laughter at some arcade game they are both playing. On closer inspection I realize its one of my favorites, Mortal Kombat. Epic!
"I all next game." All I get in response are twin grunts from the current players as they mess around with the controllers.
I barely hear my phone ring sometime later. I hear it ring once more before stopping and quickly starting again.
"Hey mom," I say as I answer the phone.
"Why haven't y'all been answering my calls? This is the fourth round of calls I've made."
I go to answer but am cut off before I get very far.
"Never mind it doesn't matter. Come home, now before I have to hunt you down with my wooden spoon."
I wince because some moms have flyswatters or flip-flops well my mother had/has a wooden spoon to wave at us and if we were in the car woo-hoo don't bother trying to say you didn't do it because at that moment it didn't matter who was wrong or right we were all getting it. I shiver one last time before politely ending the phone call.
"Hey we got to go!" I yell to be heard over the noise of the surrounding games.
"Man give us like five more minutes I am about to beat his ass." Carter shouts.
"You don't understand man she brought up wooden spoon."
The both of them stop even mid attack turn towards me paling as they see I am serious. Thankfully, they move towards the door quickly without another word.
I am an alpha and my mom with her wooden spoon still scares the shit out of me. Is that only this pack or is every alpha still scared of their mother.
