Thirty-Four
"You pack like a girl."
"That's because I am a girl, dummy."
Swinging me around, Tanner West placed a lingering kiss against my lips and placed his hands into my hair.
"I love you, anyway."
"Guys, break it up. You've got a long ride ahead of you." My brother, Ryan, trailed behind us carrying another one of my bags.
Ryan was going to be headed back to college next week, so he was able to see Tanner and I off. Tanner and I had made our final decision to attend college Texas, with an apartment close to my uncle's house. My mom, of course, would be visiting often and had plans on staying with Uncle Rudolph on her trips to tighten their bond that had been crippled from the likes of Peach Pollock. Things were looking up for my family, and I had a strange feeling that my uncle would not be single for long, as he's hinted around Trudy quite a bit.
I hugged my family members goodbye, a bittersweet moment. I know my dad would have been proud to see me off to college.
"I love you." I told Mom, forcing away the happy tears.
"You two have fun, but be safe."
We were finally on our way to Texas once again, and it didn't go thirty miles when I had to pull over for a flat tire.
"Oh no. I better go fix it." Tanner hissed.
"Nah, I got it. Someone once told me how to fix a tire, remember? I can handle it all by myself." I smiled.
"I have no doubt you can handle anything."
He was right; I could handle anything.
"I can, and so can you."
The girl who once felt the need to follow another's shadow became her own person, and the boy who once feared the truth had become fearless,
and the two ran away together to live a life worth living, to fulfill their happily ever after.
