Prologue:

An Apocalypse was coming, one so huge, so powerful, and so deadly that the human race had no chance whatsoever of surviving it, at least, normal humans didn’t. A meteorite, exhibiting strange energy signals, was headed straight for Earth, and our time was running out. Nobody knew exactly what the energy would do to the Human race, mutations, unbearable pain, instant brain death? These were all theories that scientists all around the world were determined to prevent. Though they didn’t have a clue what was coming, they knew that the only chance of preserving the human race was rewriting the very DNA that shaped it.

They discovered that the primal instincts that most animals possessed would allow them to quickly adapt, and would give them a chance to survive the storm. It was a slim glimmer of hope in a world of despair, but they clung to it with all their strength. Racing against the clock, the scientists injected as many people as they could with the genes. For most of the population, the donor animal was random, and was anything from a monkey to a hummingbird to a fish, only the rich were allowed choose. They thought that getting a stronger animal donor would make them “more advanced” and “better” than the rest of the world. But they were wrong, if anything the genes made them more vulnerable. About 50 years ago, the falling star hit the Earth, and hit hard. Everyone was killed but those at the eye of the storm, most of North America was spared, but everywhere else in the world was flooded with the radiation too quickly.

 But those who survived…changed.

The new Animal DNA gave the host the abilities of whatever animal’s genetics they shared. Some changes were minor, and even helpful to the survivors to rebuild their dying planet, but some of the survivors suffered a fate worse than death. For some reason, the radiation caused the higher class animal’s instincts to completely take over human thought and emotions. Fueled with savage bloodlust, they did what any animal would do, prove they were the dominant creature. An onslaught of lions, alligators, gorillas and other higher class animals ravaged what little of the population was left, but they were unorganized, and therefore easily contained, at least, until the bears arrived. The radiation spared their intelligence but their emotional sides were poisoned with hate, and they hungered for power. They saw the opportunity before them, the population was weakened drastically, they wanted power, and they had a whole army all ready to fight for them. They were able to rally the rest of the aggressive clans to attack the population that was too busy rebuilding to defend themselves. The battle was short, but bloody nonetheless, so bloody in fact that multiple genocides occurred. But soon, the Army’s leaders disappeared entirely. The impending forces went from an organized military force to a complete rampage of angry sociopaths destroying anything in their path, even each other at times. The defending hybrids didn’t know where the bears had mysteriously disappeared to, but they didn’t care. With the rebels weakened, the survivors were finally able to drive them out of their territory.  Only the strong survived, as it always seems to be in nature, but there was enough of the population left to rebuild.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of when the victors claimed their territory, every year, a tournament known as Darwin’s Championship is held between the different genetic groups to help keep the population unified. It is a time of remembrance for those who were lost, but also a time of optimism for the future.

So without further ado, let the games begin!
