The next day, I woke up at my regular time and slid into the shower. I began thinking about my own powers. I hadn't used them at all since I discovered them. How could I?
The showers was relieving, but my mind was still occupied as I pulled on a new set of clothes and went into the kitchen. The braided bracelet felt more comfortable than it did yesterday.
The sun beams shined in from the small window above the sink as I shifted towards the cabinet for my daily dose of cereal and milk.
My morning went by rather uneventfully and it wasn't until about the middle of my school day, did I realize just how much my powers have already changed me.
"Hey, burnt curly fries! Catch any waves?" I voice behind me called.
I turned subconsciously towards the voice, recognizing it as the two boys who have taunted me since they moved here. Their favorite nicknames seem to deprive around one phase and three words. I assume that because their small little brains can't correctly combine words to make nasty nicknames. Normally, I just let it slide as I ignore them to the best of my ability.
But, today, I wasn't feeling all too nice when being harassed.
I sent them a burning glare, showing my irritation and exasperation on full effect. "Leave me alone, you mentally incompetent simpletons." I hissed.
They backed off a little too easily and I turned to look at them once again. They seemed distracted at staring at one another's hair. Their hair seemed to be slowly, ever so slowly, burning at the ends with smoke barely leaving a trail. I glanced down at my fist, then back at their heads, and I unclenched my fist. Their burning ends stopped immediately and I turned around and began walking once again, but much faster.
I made it to my third block, thinking about how I subconsciously nearly burned their hair off. Third block ended and fourth began, and I was siting with my mind still paused as I relayed my incident from earlier.
Eventually, I had to force myself to concentrate as I rode home in my car. I made myself continue as if nothing was on my mind, and for a second, I had an irrational fear of accidentally setting my car on fire. I took a few deep breaths and instead, glanced around the window. The sky always had an brighter blue and the sun seemed whiter than it was. White, fluffy clouds frolicked across the sky in slow motion and from the old, either way road I could clearly see the ocean. It lulled back and forth in a few places, and other places it slammed itself against the beaches as the water broke away.
Why couldn't I have been a Water Bender?
I always thought my element was water, but it seemed that destiny was laughing at me. Truly, my favorite place to go to is the beach, preferably when the sun is just breaking across the sky as it would wake Everything up to start its day. That was the time when the tide was softly lull the ocean to and fro on the sandy land.
I suppose being bitter about something that is unchangeable is stupid. Besides, now I can have a hot bath any time I want.
I began to mentally list everything I could conveniently do now with my powers and when I pulled next to my house, I had nearly forgotten about my anger incident.
When I walked inside, I could almost sense my entire family sitting inside the living room. That unnerved me so much that I felt nervous as I walked around the corner towards the living room. Just as I thought, my mother, my older brother, my little sister, my grandparents, Emily and David squeezed on the couch. Luanai and Kai both were talking to their partners and Noni was whispering to my mother.
That all stopped when I entered fully into the room. My mom offered me a smile to try and calm me down a little. "Hello, Leilani, how was your day?" She asked.
"Fine." I said slowly, my mind itching with suspicion.
"I like that new bracelet, did Noni give it to you?" She asked, staring at it innocently.
"Yeah."
"That was nice of her."
"Okay, this is getting stupid. Leilani, we know you're a bender." Luanai intervened.
"Noni told me that she was going to tell you guys today," I fidgeted uncomfortably, "So, how are you guys taking it?"
"We should have known you would have your powers unlocked in a dream." Mom said, cracking a smile.
We all laughed. I understood her joke: I've always had descriptive dreams.
"So, how can we unlock our powers?" Luanai asked, excitedly.
"Noni had her powers unlocked by extreme anger." I offered, then quicker took that statement back, "But, that does not give you free range to be pissy all the time."
She glared at me and we laughed again.
"There's another reason why we are gathered together like this: we are giving you the allowance of journeying to find your soulmate. When you go, try not to get into trouble." My mother said, throwing a smirk towards Kai.
It was a known fact that people on the search for their Soulmates. In fact, Kai has his own sort of problems. While driving to Washington where Emily lived, he was nearly caught in an all out robbery. Then, after he and Emily met, they were kidnapped for about a day before they managed to make it back to Hawaii.
"When do I leave?" I asked.
"The first day of summer, that's in about a month or two. In the mean time, you can practice your powers." Noni said.
I smiled, "I hope so."
Then, I told them about my newest fire incident. They laughed and when we all separated to go to our rooms, I couldn't help but be excited about controlling my powers.
