Centuries ago, there was a war between vampires and humans. My family was one of the original groups of vampire hunters that formed during that time. However, the group's success led to many of its members being hunted down and killed, almost wiping them out entirely. My family only wanted to bring peace to the world. Sadly, that hope ended when my parents died while fighting to protect me. They left one night and never returned, leaving me an orphan. Their dream for me to have a normal life was shattered in one night. Now, I live in an orphanage run by vampires who train us to become servants for whoever wants to buy us. Many of us become blood slaves, our only purpose being to provide blood for the vampires to feed on. The rest of us are used as servants until we die. I don't know what my future holds, but anything that can get me out of this living hell the fastest would make me happy, even if it means becoming a blood bag.
Every night, I pray for a miracle to save me from this misery. However, as time passes, my hope fades away. I have witnessed many of my fellow orphans being sold to vampires, and I know that it's just a matter of time before they come for me too. Despite the fear that rages inside me, I refuse to give up. I will continue to fight until the end, even if it means facing my worst fears and putting everything I have at risk. They will not break me.
I start tying my mahogany hair up into a bun. Then, I take out my ragged dress from the closet and place it on the bed, staring at it. I can see the holes that need to be sewn and the dirt that has spread across the white fabric. I sighed as I removed my old clothes and slipped into the new outfit. I was tying a knot when my friend Courtney knocked on the door, telling me it was time to leave. I put on my flats and opened the door to greet her with a soft smile before closing it behind me. "Ready for another day of fun?" I ask sarcastically as I loop my arms around hers. "Oh, you know it." She grins at me as we begin to walk towards the corridor where all the other orphans are lined up. We lower our voices as Courtney and I get behind another girl about our age, just a tad bit shorter than us.
I take a deep breath as one male vampire walks to the front of the line with another following him. "Today is fieldwork, you are to work until you physically can't no more or until your name is called to be pulled to your new homes." Levi, the head male vampire, grins confidently, his fangs shining as his second in command, Bren, opens the door." However, if you drop, there will be consequences." The refreshing breeze wafts through the hall, kissing my face as I grin. I keep my gaze fixed on the outside world. The queue starts to shuffle forward, and we all head outside one by one. The vampires lead us to the back where the field is. It's a large land where we collect crops like vegetables for eating or dyes, and cotton to make clothes. Some animals can provide wool for clothing and meat for food. Additionally, their bones can be used as building materials or decorative items.
As we disperse into different areas of the field, Courtney and I make our way towards the wheat. We begin to cut the stalks with the scythe, the sound of metal slicing through the air. The blades are sharp and we are careful not to hurt ourselves as we work. The sun is shining down on us, causing sweat to drip down our foreheads.
After a while, we take a small break to catch our breath. We look around and see that the wheat is scattered all around us, and we begin to gather the pieces and place them in the baskets. The wheat is warm to the touch, and the smell of fresh-cut grass fills our nostrils. Once the baskets are filled, we begin to whack at the wheat again. The rhythm of our work is soothing, and we fall into a comfortable silence as we continue to cut the wheat. It's hard work, but it's satisfying to see the piles of wheat grow with each passing minute.
"Alright, you piece of shits. Lunchtime." Mistress Delphine, who's in charge around here, quickly throws a bag of supplies our way. The sound of the bag hitting the ground echoes through the cavernous space we're in. Upon opening the bag, we discover that it contains the usual turkey cheese sandwich, a pack of crackers, a packet of peanut butter, a bottle of water, and a small bag of fruity chews. The aroma of the somewhat freshly made sandwich wafts towards us, making our mouths water in anticipation of the meal ahead. It's not much, the sandwich does not have any condiments, making it dry. The only good part about the meal is the fruit chews, that's always the best part.
