Alright, another one-shot. The main series will come out later – hopefully soon – but for now, please enjoy. There isn't much you need to know about the main series to understand this, aside from the fact that my OC is the substitute midfielder for Shinsei Inazuma Japan.

--------------------------

In the end, he didn't get to score the goal like he wanted to – like he promised. But after seeing the elation on his brothers' faces, he somehow knew that even if he made a pass, as long as helped score a goal, it was enough.

The captain was excited, almost unbearably so, but he wouldn't say that. Not to his face anyways. The idiot with the glasses had apologised to him and Matatagi had had to accept, being in front of the whole team and all. He had a feeling that Kagami was somehow related to it all. She always was.

She was a weird one. The creep.

The day after the match was the only time he could get away to release his pent up frustration at a place his teammates couldn't walk in on him. He didn't have a particular place for it. He switched it almost every other day so no one could find a place he visited regularly to bug him.

An image of Matsukaze flashed by his mind.

He was another weird one. He seemed so genuine, so carefree. And for some reason, Matatagi wanted to believe him. After the match, he had a small feeling of trust when it came to the brunet but he would always push such feelings to the back of his head, seeking contentment in his seclusion.

He gritted his teeth; his fists clenched.

He was better off alone, because in the end, the only one one could trust was oneself. Everyone else would leave him alone if it benefitted them.

But if that was so, then why did a pang of loneliness gnaw to the surface every time he saw the smiling faces of his teammates?

"Those idiots," he found himself muttering. "Do they seriously think this is genuine? Once the tournament is over, they'll leave us on our own. They'll see."

"I wonder."

Matatagi jumped at the soft, eerily melodic voice. He turned around. Onyx eyes met a lone ruby one and widened, though the latter gave no expression.

What is she doing here?

The girl with the snow-white eyepatch kept her gaze on him, unblinking. No, he realized, something behind him. He turned again, meeting nothing but thin air. He turned again, finding Kagami in the same position.

It was just like her. Or rather, like the person she made herself out to be. The charcoal-haired teen who always looked nowhere and yet everywhere at the same time somehow.

Suddenly, the lone ruby eye lock onto his and he jumped at the instant action. Like a monster did in a movie seen when the character was trying to hide but failed.

She stared.

Stared for a long time, unblinking and giving him her undivided attention. Matatagi took a step backwards. She was reading him, gauging his reaction. Though the coast behind him was clear should he feel the need to flee, he somehow felt as if he was being backed against a corner.

Like a prey cornered by a predator.

The thought wasn't comforting at all. Matatagi gulped inaudibly. Just what did she want?

As if nothing was out of the ordinary, the girl tilted her head. The setting Sun's light reflected on her face and it hit Matatagi for the first time just how pale she was. Almost like a ghost. He couldn't help but think that it fit though, with the way she behaved.
