Something different for a change

"I think I'm gonna go home", I began as I stood up and paid the bill. I was about to leave the table when I heard Jay say, "Why? Geez Cam, don't tell me it's because of me planning on moving ; I thought we decided to let that go and talk about it later.. plus, didn't you promise Fitz we'd meet today?", he looked a little annoyed as he ran his hand through his hair.

I froze and then sat back down. I always kept my promises and he knew that. Fitz always did tell me that promises were made to be broken, and even though I could've used that excuse, I didn't. Fitz didn't deserve that.. nor did Rose or Deanne. So I nodded ,cracked something close to a smile and said, "Fine. Lets go meet our fools."

We both left the diner together, side by side , but far apart. We got into his car and made our way to Fitz's. As I leaned my head against the window; I began thinking about how things changed between Jay and I. Weren't we fine this morning? But then again maybe I was wrong ; maybe we weren't ever fine. In the beginning it was hand holding, forehead kisses, long stares and butterflies; so how'd we reach no eye-contact, no communication and rare hugs?

A hand moving in front of my face snapped me out of my thoughts, "We're here, Cam...c'mon." I slowly and reluctantly removed my head from the cool glass, got out of the car and shut the door as I watched Jay walk up to the porch of Fitz's cozy, warmly lit house and ring the door-bell.

A few seconds after I caught up to Jay, Mrs. Cole , or as we call her , Sophie, opened the door and greeted us both with hugs. "Where have you guys been? You guys haven't visited me in ages! Come on in!", she began as the moved us aside and let us in. Jay and I both laughed. She was like our second mom.

"Meh, we've been avoiding you", I began as I tried hiding my smile, to which she replied; rolling her eyes "Sure you have, darling. Now come here and give me another hug. Both of you." No one could ever refuse that offer. Her hugs were warm and soothing, exactly what I needed today. After the hug she let us go and said, "Go on then ; they're waiting for you guys in the basement." Jay and I both nodded and made our way there.

It was only after I pushed the door open that I realised that the room was silent. Fitz's basement was never silent. I looked at Jay and he seemed to mirror my expression of confusion as he shrugged. As we walked further inside , the first thing I noticed was Fitz's hair under a pile of blankets. His brown hair was his second best feature, his first being his double dimpled smile, his hair was smooth and soft and I'd recognise it anywhere.

It was only when I walked closer that I realized that Rose and Deanne were there too; snuggled up a little farther than Fitz, fast asleep. "They fell asleep waiting for us...", mumbled Jay as he picked up a blanket and covered Deanne's feet.

I looked at Jay and gave him a tired smile. "I guess we're joining them", I began as I sat on the floor and pulled out a blanket from a heap on the couch. Jay sighed and joined me as we both laid down, facing each other. I shut my eyes and felt the blanket reach my shoulders. "I'm sorry, tomorrow'll be a better day; I promise", I heard jay whisper just before I drifted to sleep as he kissed my forehead.
